Learned something new when I took my 2019 in for the first service. This might be old news, if so I’m sorry for clogging up the site. Anyway, I’m at 5,000 miles on my 2019 and had the tires rotated/fluids checked. I also have a 2018 4 Runner that has one free service left. I asked how early I could bring the 4 Runner as we only put about 6,000 miles a year on it. Service advisor told me I could bring it in whenever I wanted to. I thought I had to wait until the mileage or date for the free service: he told me no. It’s my car and I can ask for the free service whenever I want to. He told me he could do all 5 free services within 5 weeks... doesn’t matter about miles or time. For those guys and gals who insist on the early oil change, sounds like you could get it done free at 1,000 miles or whenever you want right from the dealer. Just FYI as it was a surprise to me. And I can take my 4 Runner in 2 months early, before I’m going to get slammed at work, and not have to worry about it again for a year.

Really depends on the dealer. I've heard some turn you away until the maintenance minder clicks on, and even then just do a tire rotation and inspection until 10k intervals for the free oil changes.

Lies. I’ve been denied the oil change at 4500 miles. Depends on dealer for sure.

I wonder how the dealers get reimbursed? I guess I’ll find out for sure when I take the 4Runner in early next week.

Logic says it's handled exactly the same as a warranty repair except with a different billing code.

Agree it has to vary by dealer. I tried with my 4Runner at the 5k service and they wouldn’t change the oil. Same with my Tundra (same dealer). I am unfortunately in an area where most dealers regardless of brand lack basic customer service.

You don’t have to do all of them to get the oil changes too. At least at my dealer. I didn’t want to waste time on the 15k, but thought maybe I had to in order to get the 20k oil change. But I didn’t.

Took mine in for the 12 month service with just over 2k miles. They grumbled a little bit but did it.
