Why the hell do Toyota engineers decide that consumers do not want to have a constant power supply I mean they could at least make one powered USB like every truck out there. I mean sometimes you want to charge your phone or whatever when you are not in your truck.

And what the fuck were they thinking they decided that you can't go into reverse with your door open.

I am sure someone out there much smarter than me has simple solutions thank you for letting me vent.

I have never heard of the "door-open-no-reverse" interlock. New nanny state regulation? Or just Toyota's engineers trying to keep us all safe?

The reverse lockout isn’t just a Toyota thing.

I suspect that a reverse lockout with door open is a Toyota legal...read overly scared of law suit lawyers...thing.

I agree, the lack of no USB with the truck off is downright stupid. Either an oversight, or some other lawyer paranoia.

You would be shocked at the number of chocolate brains that have run themselves over while reversing with the door open. I consider it natural selection but as usual the stupidity of others only affects the rest of us.

They don't want you charging lithium battrees when you're not right there to manage the explosion and subsequent fire spread.

No way to tap off the fuse box onto whatever 12v to 5v converter is used for the USB outlet?

And if they did put in an always on USB, you'd see a bunch of threads of people complaining about killing their batteries by leaving their devices on charge and how could Toyota be so stupid to allow it.

You can always add your own.

As for the door, it is to stop kids from opening the door when their dad is backing up the boat or trailer and decide to open the door

I haven't had an issue with either.

All true, believe me, I live in the king of nanny states, Minnesota, though California had to be worse. I have had constant power in all my previous trucks and never had any battery issues. That makes sense with the open-door issue I only wanted backing up a foot or so

As far as the door open….when the door is open and you put it in reverse or drive you are locked out, all you have to do is go back to Park and then go to Drive or Revese again. I guess it’s Toyotas way of saying “are you sure you want to drive with the door open”

I can speak to the reverse-while door open thing. A few years ago Jeep lost a multimillion dollar lawsuit about a woman who accidentally ran herself over with her car while it was in reverse. NTHSA determined that Jeep failed to create a safety lockout to prevent this from happening, so now a LOT of the more risk averse manufacturers are throwing on the brakes if the car is in gear while the door is open above certain speeds. You have to put the car into park while the door remains open and then back into gear. That action is logged in your ECU as a bypass event and also sent to TC servers on connected vehicles so if a user is injured, it protects Toyota from liability since the user has to intentionally bypass that safety feature.

In a work truck, the reverse thing would drive me crazy. I'd end up just tying the contact closed on the door switch

Damn, that reverse thing sucks. I back up looking out the door a lot to not hit smaller objects I can’t judge by looking out the back window with no reference objects.
