One moment all is fine,3 hours later won't start. Engine turns over strong. I pulled all the plugs nothing abnormal. Replaced with new Denso Iridium. Bought new coil pack ends and replaced those. Went ahead and did valve cover gaskets. This is my second time in that arena and it's still no fun. It started up fine that morning it ran for about 10 minutes. Shut it off, went to leave for the store a few hours later and it would not start. I bought this truck new in 01 and have given it the best of care. It was running great. I had a guy offer me 10 grand for it 2 years ago. It has 253,000 and I was hoping to get another 250 out of it. Could this be a fuel issue. Timing belt is fine. It has original starter and alternator. Would a blown head gasket cause it not to start? I'm surely not ready to tackle that job. I have a test kit to check for it but the truck has to be running. Would disconnecting the fuel filter and seeing if fuel is getting to there be worth the time? It's tough without a second pair of hands and eyes but I'm doing what I can. Has anybody had this happen or heard of it happening. All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

I would start with the fuel pump driver module.

Is the check engine light on? Are there any pending codes stored? I would clean the MAF and verify the coolant temperature sensor and MAF are reporting a decent value to the ECU.

When was the timing belt last replaced? Wires routed behind the fan bracket correctly and not making contact with the serpentine belt?

It is pretty unusual for a factory fuel pump to just die. They usually get real noisy before failing. When it doesn't start, can you get it to fire with starting fluid?

I think you need to run through some basic diagnostics before trying more stuff.
It's the advice everyone hates to hear, but you really can't find a solution until you find the problem.
    Slow is fast.

Smarter people than me are inbound for this thread with lots of good advice, but check battery, voltage from alternator, check for codes, etc.
Find any info you can and others will lead you the way

I'm on board with everything being said. I'm not one to rush into things freewheeling. I'm receiving no codes, I can hear the fuel pump when i turn key on. Battery is good. Nothing on this truck has been neglected from front to back. That's why it's so puzzling. It showed no signs of anything. Like I said started fine that morning, that afternoon wouldn't start. What could have happened in the 10 or so minutes it ran that morning? Had to have been something happen but what? It doesn't make sense to me but I will take everyone's advice and do all that is suggested. I'm fairly decent at trouble shooting problems but normally you have something to go on.

This may sound crazy, but I chased a random no-start condition on my Tacoma once for nearly two weeks, just to find out I had a loose ground that was causing issues. I would start by verifying your battery posts are properly connected and tight, with no corrosion.

Ditto what everyone else is saying. I’d start things off by checking fuel pressure.

Whatever your hearing isn't the fuel pump when you just turn the key to "on". Fuel pump won't engage until the crank sensor sees the engine rotating.

    First off.

If you want to know if it’s a fuel delivery issue, go to the local parts store. Buy a can of starting fluid (ether). Spray it into the throttle body when the truck won’t start. If it first right up, you know you have a fuel delivery issue.

But before that, and before you crank the engine anymore:
    • Timing belt is due every 90k/9yrs, when was it last done? Not saying it is that, this sounds more like fuel delivery to me, and if it’ll start after slapping the fuel tank, then it’s potentially fuel pump. BUT… DO NOT change the fuel pump!!! (Yet, because…)
    • Last time the timing belt was done, was the crank position sensor harness routed correctly, behind the A/C bracket, so it won’t get nicked, thus causing the fuel pump to shutoff, randomly?
    • Are there currently any codes stored or pending? Don’t trust the check engine light, on ‘00-04 trucks, that light can burn out and sometimes people do really stupid shit like ignoring O2 sensor codes, which will cause the light to burn out with time.
    • Have you checked the state of the cam position sensor wiring that routes into the driver side cam cover?
