Curious what others would choose if they had to move on from their tundra to a “commuter” car. Unfortunately, this is a reality I may eventually have to embrace although I am holding out as long as possible. I bought my tundra a few years ago when I was on remote work. Now, the policy has changed so I have a fairly decent commute to work. Been thinking Camry naturally as I’ve always trusted Toyota. But others have told me to look into Subaru or Honda.

Previous generation WRX. The current ones are ugly IMO

Had one, sold it for a 4Runner in 2021. Was a blast to drive and got decent fuel economy.

Camry. We have a 2015 2GR-FE Camry if you don't mind the Largemouth bass front end. 154k miles and has been stellar.

I always thought of Camry as the go too. Family had a 00’ for a few years and it was a beast. I can’t belive how expensive they are now…

I've had 2, 2011 I4 and the 2015 we have now with no issues. Not sure how the newer ones are doing but if the complaints on NHTSA website are minimal, that's my go to replacement.

If you go Civic stay away from the 12-17, my brother used it for a while and handed it down to my kid, but has a host of issues. Biggest one is the VSA/ABS module where solders break, like the aux jack in my 07 Tundra and I'm getting a shit load of problems. ABS, Vehicle stability, lost comms with accelerator pedal among other issues. SRS system has the same problem, SRS light comes on, must be sent out for reset.

New Prius or corolla! Those things sip fuel and you can just rack up the miles with zero issues and resale isnt back when you get tired of it

damn that’s rough. Ya, I would want something a little more spacious/substantial than a civic especially on DFW freeways lol.

Occasionally burn down the road with our old beater 2010 Corolla to save gas. About 240K miles with just basic maintenance and has never thrown a code. All original parts basically. Shakes, rattles, but rolls, just not a speed demon.

Keep the truck and buy an older commuter car.

If you buy a used Toyota, make sure they didn't follow the recommended 10K oil changes. It took me a while to find my daughters 2011 Corolla S, but it had solid maintenance records and burns no oil. Car now has 130K miles and still gets 36 mpg regularly in mixed driving.

These cars are stupid cheap to maintain and the last set of tires I put on was 299.00 for Nokian all weather tires.

Are you keeping the tundra or getting rid of it? What kind of needs do you have in the vehicle? What's your budget? MPG requirements?

I'm not sure what we would do without a truck. We just use it way too much not to have one around even if we didn't have trailers.

Another vote for a Camry here. Though I’d say the 2018+ with the A25A and the 8-speed. The fuel economy is impressive.

My mother in law has a pretty pimped out Rav 4 hybrid. Two tone, all the features my Tundra has, awd and phenomenal on gas, especially city driving. It looks great, it’s got pep, and it’s comfortable

I would look at the newest Lexus ES I could afford. You get all the reliability, plus comfort and luxury.

I just had a RAV4 Hybrid as a rental a few weeks ago. That thing flies, and I thought the non-hybrid RAV4 my wife has was quick. But then again, I have a 4Runner with the 4.slow and a Sonic with the 18.L so it doesn’t take much for a vehicle to feel quick to me :D

Yeah, its got the withdrawal shakes. I drive it to work occasionally to try and replicate issues. I get them at different speeds though. Scary af.

Yeah, he has long commute to work now, and thinking of trading in tundra for something more economical. Sure, a brand new Lexus is a great idea!

Camry/corolla is a good option, especially the base model camry hybrid that gets the best mpg due to the different battery. The bz4x is also the worst loved EV, but can be had used for as little as 20-25k.

I got an FJ cruiser as my commute vehicle to put miles on, 190k miles for $12k. MPG isn’t great but it’s fun, medium size and interesting to drive a soon to be relic. Not worried about parking lots etc. Makes when I drive the Tundra special as well.

Similar boat here, but with a GX470. Almost 200k. I take great care of it but not as worried about keeping it perfect like the Tundra. The gas mileage is terrible however. Prior to that I had a Corolla with a 5 spd manual, manual locks & windows. I got 36 mpg and it was a great commuter vehicle. I would pick up another Corolla
in a heartbeat if I still had a long commute.

I purchased a 2007 Lexus IS350 as my commuter car in 2016. Had 60k miles on it. When I sold it earlier this year it had 170k miles. The only problem I had with the car was the alternator failed and burnt up around 140k miles. Everything else was just maintenance. Loved the power/sporty feel (306 hp/rwd) and the fuel economy was actually pretty good. 25+ (best tank was 28 mpg).
    IMG_8124.jpg

By far the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I was really looking at an IS500 for the retirement vehicle.

    ICE- Camry 4cyl

EV- Tesla M3 or MY. Tesla excels at being a great commuter. This assumes you have the ability to charge at home. Used prices are nice

This will be a little unpopular with the Toyota crowd but we had a2015 Kia Sportage we just traded in on a Kia Sorento, 200 plus thousand and no issues.

I have a Lexus CT 200h as my commuter car currently. It’s getting mid 40’s- low 50’s for mpg’s, is comfortable and has great handling. Its also great to drive in the city and is easy to park. My only complaint is that it’s slow. Especially when I have to pass people on the hwy.

Definitely a Camry. Most boring car in the world but that is what makes it so great. I guess I can't say that, some of the new ones looking pretty sporty.
