I'd like to stare at your rack

Advantages / dissadvantages?
What do you like , what's not to like ?
I want to haul two 10' kayaks, and be able to swap those off for a RTT when needed.
I almost bought a RCI bed rack , but I am not going to strap rotopax or hi lifts to the bed.
I have retractable tonneau cover ...

Please share with me your experiences, help yourself to my internet ice chest full of cold internet beers...

Here's my rack...my truck isn't bashful, stare all you want

 

I love racks.

 

Looks pretty good! I really like the design. Simple, sturdy and functional.

But....cold lap, lack of fusion on the tie in, spatter...god I hate being a welder, I naturally inspect the hell out of everything.

It won't bust apart, that's for sure! I'm just being a typical welder. Ignore my pettiness.

Assuming you welded it yourself? Turn your heat up a touch and slow down your travel speed a bit. That should clear up the cold lap. You could also do a bit of a whipping motion with your nozzle, but that's hard to describe without phsyically showing you. Wrapping the corners will help with the fusion. Spatter...perfectionist bullshit, don't worry about it. LOL

 

Come to Texas and teach me how to weld

Dont know if that's my weld or not, I dont particularly like a mig.
The noise a mig makes, does make me go to fast !

I hear ya. MIG's noise does that to me sometimes. Try wearing ear plugs. My welds, with all processes, are better when I wear earplugs. It dulls the noise and I can focus on puddle control better

 

Anybody use the Relentless bars? Those seem to fit my application.

 

That's what I really wanted but shipping to Ohio was near the same amount as the bars !

No sweat - i tried teaching myself to weld when i was 16. it was horrible

I really dig my Coachbuilder roof rack. Well built, installation was pretty easy, solid. Great for my surfboard and my kayak. 10' kayaks would fit on this really well on a CM. I admit, it would be a bit of a bitch getting em up there, but it would be great for developing those lats for kayaking.

That's why you Tig , no sound, no spatter, no worries. Clean weld . It does require some skill, but I could teach you in no time. Women make great welders, I know a lot of them.
