Hybrid System- Inconsistencies

    Hello All

    So I have about 1200 miles on my new platinum and am a little bit puzzled on how the hybrid system engages into full electric. My daily commute is 20 miles with 14 on the highway and 6 in rural roads in Freeport Maine. I've been able to get 21.4 during that commute on a day- 18.2 on the next. No difference in driving, same route, same routine. The annoying thing on the ladder trip is that no matter what I tried, I couldn't get it to switch to all electric like I can on so many other days. Only difference I could think of was ambient temperate was roughly 10 cooler on the worse mpg day. Speed limit is 25 to 40 through town with a variable grade; mostly down hill.

    Any suggestions or insight??

    Tank average has been 19.4 on the last tank and getting better with each tank. "Max" battery level never drops below one dot- Kinda annoying it can be utilized further.

    I don’t have a hybrid Tundra, but we have a hybrid RAV4. I average 46mpg in the summer but it drops to about 36mpg in the winter. One reason I believe is running the heat requires the ICE to run even if the battery has sufficient charge to run on battery alone. That could have something to do with it.

    Cold temps impact hybrid operations. Suggest you run a longer loop as a test allowing all systems to warm up to operating temperatures and battery taking on full charge. When I did this, the Hybrid system worked consistantly. I have a three mile commute and the Hybrid does not initiate at all. On days like this, I will take a longer route home.

    I would say your doing just fine, that is good mileage for a truck and the hybrid system in the tundra is built for torque not mpg, so trying to kinda hypermile it isn’t going to yield the typical hybrid “better” numbers

    also they are designed to run between 20-80% on purpose to prolong the life of the battery so it’s working right

    just enjoy your rig and don’t worry about it
