How to use trip counters

Hello,

I'm trying to use the trip counters but they seem entirely useless right now. Ill start the truck and reset the counter, then stop wherever and turn the truck off, then on, keep going but the counter has reset. Seems like both the counters reset back to 0 ever time the engine is cycled, this seems very pointless to me, not being able to track over multiple stops.

Gotta be a setting or something that I'm missing, please enlighten me.
