Hey guys. I just bought my first Tundra and I love it. 2020 Limited TRD 4x4 in quicksand. But I want to make it look a bit beefier and don’t know a whole lot about it. Trying to get into customizing a vehicle. So need some info. I’d like to keep the stock wheels and put 35 inch tires on with some fender flares. What would I need to do this without rubbing? I’ve looked and looked for an answer but can’t find one for my specific problem. It’s gonna be my everyday driver as well so comfort is important.

You won't be able to keep the stock wheels.
    It will rub
You don't want a daily driver with 35s.

You might be able to keep the stock wheels if you add wheel spacers. You may have to have a body mount chop done (also known as a cab mount chop), plastic fender trimming and a front lift (maybe 2.5” to 3”?). At 3” of lift up front, it’s recommended you also replace the upper control arm with an aftermarket one.

Why can’t you have a daily with 35s?

    I went 285/75/18 on stock wheels. They measure 34.8” x 11.4”

All I did was add 5100 shocks in the front on the middle setting, I get no rub anywhere.

The only key to running 35s is wheel selection. Running 35s on OEM wheels, especially rock warrior wheels is pretty easy, even at stock height. You'll have to trim the edge of the skid plate and the front fender plastic since the tire will contact it, and you will be close to contacting the UCA as well.

If you get aftermarket wheels, aim for a 8.5" or 8" width with an offset of +25 or higher and you'll still be able to run 35s stock.

I ran 35s and had no issues DD'ing the truck, still felt like it had more power and drove better than my 2018 Taco did with stock wheels and tires.

yes I changed the front shocks out and it was dead level. It came very close to the skid plate edges so I trimmed it back a little bit as a precaution.
I already had the mudflaps removed, so I can not speak as to whether or not it would have rubbed those.

In the photo I posted I have a 1” lift in the rear installed to give me back some of the rake I lost with the leveling shocks, but the tires fit in the rear on stock height.

I didn’t quite understand that, either. I would’ve thought Tundras should be more than capable of handling 35’s. My old ‘93 fullsize Bronco had them with the Dana 44 front and rear 8.8 and did fine as a daily, even with the smaller 5.0. and no regear. Definitely some power loss but no issues at all with the 35’s, and we abused that Bronco to no end (now the other reliability issues had nothing to do with bigger tires). The Tundra’s gearing is lower than the Bronco’s and has a much more powerful engine with greater torque and way more reliable. The rear diff and axles are also much beefier than a Ford 8.8. Even with the power loss it should still be fine, but I admit I have no experience daily driving my Tundra with 35’s, at least not yet. My guess as to the Tundra’s weak points with bigger, heavier tires would probably be the steering rack and the front CVs with a locked front while gunning it in 4wd and turning at the same time on hard rock. Maybe also the lug studs, wheel bearings and axle housing? I thought I read about lug issues from a few running 37’s. But I would still think 35’s should be okay. I hope to upgrade to 35’s in a year or so, though.

So many people running 35s and yet so few posts about issues other than cutting plastic. Dont over think it, there are guys on Tacomaworld running 35s daily w/o issues too. Those things would be dogs without a serious regear and even with one theyd still have less go than a Tundra. I was personally blown away when I put 35s on mine. It was such a small change in driving I wasnt ready for it. By comparison, putting Ridge grapplers in stock size on the Tacoma increased the wheel/tire weight by about 10lbs per corner and it was frustratingly underpowered and stiff. Doing 35" ATZp3s with Icon wheels on the Tundra only felt a slight power loss but everything else felt the same.

I have a 2.5inch lift with 35. I took the mud flaps off and had to heat gun the front plastic down a little bit.

Understandable. But why wouldn’t he want 35s as a daily driver? Or why don’t you want 35s on your daily?
