Oviously I’ll need Oil (no discussion needed on brand of oil) and a filter (duh). I’ll go with this: (See Pic 1) Although my son works for NAPA and may switch to Wix / Napa in the future

See Picture #2: This makes sense. Change from Plastic to metal. I assume for reliability this is a smart buy.

Also, I assume I need this to get the above off. So which one Of pic 3, 4??

Or would this one be better? It is $10 cheaper. But since I will own it for the life of my truck, I will want what works best. What does that drain tube hook into? It is available separately (see Picture 5)

I have seen the Fumoto valve recommended. I assume this goes in the oil pan. Is it just a neatness thing? Seem to cut ground clearance. Will it work with a truck with a TRD skid plate? (See Pic 6)

One more question. Has anyone found a good YouTube that shows this?? How does the skid plate complicate things? Is there a good link on this site where it is shown step by step?

Any help to get me on my way to self sufficient oil changes would be appreciate.

The Motivx filter wrench and the Fumoto valves are awesome! I would add the Motivx funnel that screws onto the fill hole too.

The TRD skiddy plate has teh access panel for earl filter... not necessary to remove entire skid.

I, Spraynard, am leary of the lunium filter canister. It's a popular mod round here, but I have my reason.

My least favorite part of my SR5's oil change is removing the skid plate. Almost cut an access panel in mine Sunday on my last oil change.

First off please don’t buy that stuff from Amazon because half of it is probably fake…ask me how I know…

    But I digress…

As previously mentioned go with the Motivx kit. I love it and it work’s absolutely great on all my Toyotas. Well worth the price of cleanliness and quality of the tools included.

In regards to the skid plate, it a PITA to be honest. I purchased the RCI aluminum skid plate for the only two purposes of having that oil filter door and rust resistant material in NY winters.

Fumoto is a cleanliness and efficiency tool. While my oil is draining it allows me to work on things without fear of spillage.

If you buy the metal canister, make sure you swap the perforated tube from the plastic one into the metal one, you need the longer tube to support the filter.

Of those two I'd buy the MotivX because it comes with the drain tube, buying the other filter wrench and drain tube would cost more. I have the MotivX kit you linked and it works great. I already have a funnel so I didn't buy the screw in one from MotivX. As for the drain tube, that screws into the bottom of the filter canister to drain the oil from the canister before removing the canister to replace the filter.

yes, the Fumoto valve replaces the drain bolt on the oil pan. This aids in cleaner oil changes. It doesn't hang below the skid plate so I can't see it being an issue.

If you have the stock SR5 (black stamped steel) skid plate that will need to be removed to change the oil filter. If you have a TRD Pro (or most aftermarket I'm sure) skid plate there is an access panel in the plate to reach the oil filter without needing to remove the entire skid plate. As for a video, I haven't sen one but I'm sure there is one somewhere, it's an easy job to do.

The aluminum oil filter housing is not necessary but it is nice as long as you get the genuine part instead of aftermarket.
Definitely get a fumoto valve, it'll fit with any skip plate and make oil changes far less messy. I have the cheaper of the filter housing sockets and it works fine, however I think the motivx one is nicer.
I you don't have the trd skid plate yet, you don't actually have to drop the stock one to change the filter. I just reach in from the wheel well (one hand) and I'm able to drain and remove the filter. Drain the oil with the fumoto and a hose into your pan, while it's draining move to oil filter and drain the filter housing into a separate container. By the time the filter is changed the main pan is completely drained.
If you've had the dealer change your oil previously you'll need to drop the skid plate the first time so you can get a breaker bar on the filter housing to get it off.

I considered getting the Fumoto Valve until I read about the ValvoMax. It is a different design and doesn’t stick out as far as the Fumoto Valve does. Plus it doesn’t have a lever to open it. I’m paranoid of the Fumoto accidentally opening while driving. It would probably never happen but the ValvoMax is out of sight, out of mind.

Another vote for the MotivX kit. I also have the funnel and you can get different lower chambers that fit different cars. I have the screw-in ones for Honda and Toy, plus the twist adapter for our Sienna. If you use 5 qt jugs, the funnel is a lifesaver, since you don't have to use 1 hand to hold a funnel while trying to wrangle a full jug.
I don't use the Fumoto valve. I just use a 5 gal bucket dedicated to oil changes rather than a drain pan and it prevents the oil from splashing onto the passenger wheel.
