So...I just purchased the Tundra with about 8.5k miles on the ODO. The Carfax said the truck was just serviced by the dealership (no clue what they actually did). So I just got some AMSOIL goodies from @lewi3069 and decided just to switch over to the good stuff. Well I was absolutely amazed at how black the motor oil was. Currently, the truck has 9.5k miles and by the looks of the oil I am assuming it hadn't been changed yet. SO here's a picture. What do you guys think?
Does this oil look consistent for having 9.5k miles of use?

That looks about like mine after 5k or so. Toyota recommends 10k oil changes. The dealership service could have been the free tire rotation at 5k. I’m assuming yours is not a ffv.

Yep you assumed correctly it is not a FFV. Okay, I was just super surprised and don't recall my oil in my Tacoma to look like that. I guess we'll see what the next change looks like with AMSOIL syn + filter.

This could dangerously spiral into another 10k really? Thread....lol

While the questionable oil is dark, the 10k synthetic oil and filter rotation is perfectly fine.

Look at all the million mile Tundra service records that were posted online. Two separate trucks.

No harm in earlier changes or Amsoil either...just saying.

Good call in changing it though.

I was floored by a post on this forum that Walmart branded full synthetic (super tech) performed a tad bit better than Mobil 1. Penzoil Ultra was only beat by Amsoil but a fraction of the cost. My next oil is super tech for beater and Penzoil for Tundra. I go once a year if its 3K miles or 20K miles. Car engines are jokes. If they ran 24 hours a day in 3 months they would have 100K miles on them. We have plant equipment that runs 5 years on the same oil. Anything less than 10K buy mineral oil.

I think if you check with any dealer they should be able to pull up service records with the VIN. My truck was purchased in June of last year and I get free oil changes, tire rotations, etc., every 5k miles until 20K miles.

I was on a road trip out of statue for my 10K and just scheduled it a a Toyota dealer where I was. They had all the info and it transferred to my local dealer.

For sure, I thought about sending some away to be analyzed but I doubt I'll go that far.

That's nice! Will you buy the extended Toyota care after it runs out?

Haha. Absolutely. Yeah I'm glad I changed it also. I'm going to out Severe Gear in the rear diff next. Just want to do my due diligence on staying on top of it all. The AMSOIL filters call for 15k mile intervals so maybe I'll just change oil in another 7.5k.

This is what my oil looked like at 700 miles when I did the first change after break-in. Pretty black for relatively new oil. So probably hard to tell how many miles on the oil by just looking at it.

I never know what my oil looks like at 9800+

I just know the dealership is the cheapest syn in town and it falls perfectly in Toyotas plan for the 5.7

The only things I'd change is the crazy parking meter sensor malfunction and the odd placed starter... and maybe the easily scratched plastic interior.

Interesting. I'm doing my first oil change tomorrow at 5300 miles. I'll post mine when I am done.

I don't think they would let you go 10K on an oil change if it would lead to issues they would have to warrant.

I’m guessing an oil analysis is far more indicative of the remaining quality of your oil than is the visual appearance, unless you have antifreeze in it.

I will need to think about it. It’s not the power train that concerns me but the electronics. I’ll probably make the decision in the next few months.

After 700 miles?? Wow now that I wouldn't have seen coming...I suppose it makes a lot more sense for mine to be that dark if it hadn't been changed yet at all.

Hey there...my 2019 just rolled 20,000 this weekend. When I purchased new, I changed the oil for the first time at 1,000 miles to remove all break in contaminants.

To keep it simple I changed the oil again at 5,000, 10,000, 15,000 and now 20,000 miles. For all oil changes it looked exactly like the color in your photos. Each time I used an OEM oil filter and 0W20 Rotella Gas & Truck (RGT). Although the color of your oil is no indication of performance my experience says the color is normal and good on you for changing your oil. I’ve used all my RGT stock, I may switch to M1 or Quaker State or whatever I can find on sale. Enjoy your truck!

The plant I work at never changes oil in anything. I look in some of the hydraulic power packs and it’s like mud, but they still keep working.

I read about guys changing diff fluid at less than 60k, why bother. My buddy never charged trans or diffs on his Tacoma for 15 years, 200,000 miles, he got T Boned and the insurance gave him $10k more than he thought it was worth.

just drive it. Don’t go crazy on maintenance.

Color means nothing.. Oil is a lubricant and a conveyor of dirt to the filter, so if it discolors, its doing what is was intended to do.

I use Mobile synthetic from Costco, good price and a good oil. I change it every 5k on my 2020 as I did on my 2014 since the oil does get dirty. I do feel that a clean good quality oil trumps a top synthetic with extended oil changes with our 5.7.

Wow so here's the oil analysis. I thought they'd email me but turns out it was on me to look it up. Only thing the oil showed was a little higher silicon level...maybe others out there can read into it more than I can.

Silicon is dirt intrusion, leaky air filter or the like. TBN is 5.2 and everything else is ok, still a useable and viable lubricant.
