How many miles are too many on a used Gen 3 with 5.7?

I’m considering buying a higher mileage Gen 3 just for truck stuff since I plan to retain a commuter car. How many miles is too many on a 5.7 4x4? I feel like the key is the service records which will tell the tale of the truck, and I’ll obviously have to replace some wear items sooner than later.

I drive about 60 miles a day at a minimum. If I get a used one I can justify the expense of certain customization that I’d otherwise forego on a DD.

    Thanks for any constructive input.

BTW, I’ve owned a ton of different vehicles and won’t daily drive my project car again.

I bought 16 with 50-55k I forget. It was only 2 years old. The guy drove it but kept good service and I got a 3 year 36k warranty.

I just bought a 2015 CM limited with only 36k on the clock. It was certified so I got the 7 yr 100,000 along with it..Just shop around there are deals to be had with a little work.

If you really want peace of mind, shop for a certified truck. That way Toyota is on the hook for a while.

I’ll have to look at the CPO site. I haven’t really been looking at used ones until the past few days since I planned to just buy a new one. High resale value is a double edged sword in this case.

Yup. Been there. I ended up just buying new because the used ones do hold their value so well it just didn’t seem worth it to me.

If you decide on a used 3rd gen then definitely go with a 15 or newer so you can get the larger fuel tank.

Wasn’t it 16 when they first offered a 38 as an option?

I agree! I saved $10,000 + off of new and got the longer warranty. But they are far in few in between. If your looking for a 17 or newer used then a new 2019 is probably the better way to go. 2014 and up are the 3rd generation and all pretty close to being the same. Just find one with low mileage and a clean VIN..My truck had been bought locally and was only serviced at the dealership so I have all the service records

Yup agreed. And buy a Snickers when you need to fill up 3/4 or more cause it’ll be a while.

This is what I’m looking at. Something like this. It’s not CPO, but it’s been serviced at Wyatt Johnson Toyota where I’d take it for things and there’s a dealer million mile warranty. Better than no warranty.

Or this at Wyatt Johnson (the local Toyota dealer). I don’t like the folding center console but that’s an easy mod. Same deal, locally serviced at this dealer and comes with the dealer lifetime warranty.

I think it depends on whether you want the double cab vs crewmax. I’ve never been in a position where I regretted getting a crewmax instead of double cab. I thoroughly enjoy the extra space in the backseat seats up or down. Crewmax seems to be more popular and in demand when it comes time to sell, it might be easier to sell a crewmax.

@Romad99 "How many miles is too many on a 5.7 4x4?"

It's a Toyota, so I don't know that there is a definitive answer! Last year, I purchased my 2016 Tundra 5.7 4x4 as a certified pre-owned. It had 55K miles when I bought it — I have had no problems or regrets.

Before I bought the Tundra, I had a Sequoia V8 with 230K miles (even that is not a lot for a Toyota).

Do service records such as oil change etc make a large deciding factor? I ask because I change my own oil, grease prop shaft etc and I firmly believe I do a way more meticulous job then the oil change bays at a dealer.

It’s helpful to see the records these days, but I am the same way with maintenance that I perform. Having said that, if the truck is tip top but has no records in a car fax I’d consider it.

    16. Also, aside from a road trip or something... really not a big factor. Definitely not a reason to pass up a truck that’s a good deal

True, but it was one deciding factor among others for me. 9mpg towing my boat with my 1st gen I couldn't make it to Lake Havasu on a 26 gallon tank. Really annoying after doing it for years with my old boat that was smaller. (I know, first world problems). No gas stops the last 100 miles ish.

But if you really wanted to you can install the big tank for cheaper than a newer pricier one.

I just purchased a used 2014 platinum and it's great. Came from a Chevy and before that I had a Tacoma so this ones drives just like my Taco just more space. It had 51k on it and seems to be great and also bought extended warranty for it.

You might be the best mechanic ever but unless I can see your records, I will always buy a dealer maintained over an owner maintained.

Definitely if you’re gonna tow, the larger tank is the way to go. Also, not sure if the OP is an outdoorsman, but one of the reasons I wanted the larger tank is the extra fuel I could carry in remote places. I go on an annual fishing trip up to the mountains each year and don’t have to worry about filling up at the ONE gas-station we pass and pay an arm and a leg for fuel. I made the full round trip last year and returned to home with about 90 miles left on my range. It’s 370 miles round trip not including all the buzzing around from camp to our fishing spots.

I did the same thing. Haven't had any issues, and it drives absolutely perfect so far.

Best advice is just to keep up with the maintenance schedule.
