The DAC/CRAWL system is fantastic for low speed downhill. However, the manual is too short about it. Does it operate only with the brakes only? As there a warning about brakes getting hot, should I gear down simultaneously?

Was coming down a narrow 4WD trail over the weekend with the DAC turned on. Trail was about 3 miles long. At mile 1.5 the brakes were very hot. I will be using the transmission next time and reserving the DAC for feature related crawling.
