I was reading through the forums and found a thread on a “Snorkel” installation. Although fugly, in his application, valuable.

A questions was asked without answer.

    1) “How deep can a stock Tundra go in water before there is an issue?”

    2) If the read differential breathing tube was extended and the secondary air injection intake relocated (seems like a relatively easy mod), how deep could a stock Tundra do before an issue?

The point, maybe doing those mods alone would provide enough water clearance if doing stream/river crossings?

Keep in mind, all the electrical plugs under the hood are water resistant. Not water proof. The fan clutch would also not be happy trying to turn through water.

The stock intake is up in the passenger wheel well so it won't suck up water for a bit. Thing is, you'll flood the cab and all the electrical stuff in it before you get to the intake.

The snorkel for the Tundra and Tacoma are for dusty conditions on a trail, not for water crossings. You need an older less electrical vehicle for that, or you need to waterproof shit tons of wiring and connections.

All depends on a lot of factors, such as skill and luck…

If you are good and doing a quick in and out water crossing, creating a good bow wave, you can be headlight deep. But if you stop or that quick dip is longer than a few seconds, you’re done for.

as already mentioned water will be quickly rushing in the cab. Water over the hood will come in the hvac system through the cowl and your bed is filling with water adding a lot of drag.

"Snorkel" was a terrible name for these. A land snorkel maybe.

This is what I needed. I’m not interested in a “Snorkel.” But a stock truck highest water level. It sounds like the depth just below the bottom door level is doable without danger. Crossing streams and rivers, not always easy as it looks. A soft stream floor or unseen dips are what worry me. How often will I be doing this? Not often. However, understanding one’s equipment limitations can save a lot of cost and headaches.

You can submerge it up to the intake. You shouldn’t. But you can. And water won’t come gushing in neither. Just keep moving.

Surely there's a fording depth spec for these trucks  I mean, it's a truck!

Edit: and surely google can't produce it. I just checked :rain:

I've had water come over the hood, 35s, 3" lift, no other modifications. I don't know how much of a bow wave effect I was actually getting since I was crossing a street that was flooding and effectively had become a raging river. I was shitting myself hoping it wasn't going to die. Wouldn't recommend doing recreationally, but it lived

Oh I found a photo from that day:

I’d think depth-wise, probably up to the headlights not counting a bow wave as you’re pushing it.

At night when your headlights go under water and you suddenly can’t see in the middle of the woods, you start to question if it keeps getting deeper. Kick on the overheads and realize you’re in a river that wasn’t there yesterday.

It was a F150 in my case, never had an issue. Guessing the Toyota could do better. So, up to the headlights for worry-free!
