I must be right down the road from you! My generator’s been running for days. I just did an oil change on it after it ran for 36 hours non stop and put it right back to work.

Yesterday it was an ETA for 7/16 and now it's no later than 7/14. Either way, we were just about outta fuel (no gas around here at all) and finally found a place with propane so all our tanks got filled (including the 100#) and we found gas to fill those tanks too. Small wins - I'll take what I can get.

Ha no but with this problem not getting better over the years we will be spending money we don’t want too. But I’m not going to get raped for one neither!!! One to power the house, we have had small ones but they are a pita to run the fuel out of and if you don’t then it’s to the shop for carb work. I just hate it but after this I am going to be calling in some favors for a 20kw generator from my marine buddies!

Well, I still have no power, nor internet. Centerpoint, southern Montgomery county.

Drove to my folks house in Entergy as they got power today. Haven’t seen a single Centerpoint truck or contractor, only AT&T.

FWIW, I work in this industry and it is a real mess right now.

I woke up to change battery in fan. Going on 72 hours and still no power. 8 trucks and a whole bunch of linemen were working on 2 downed poles and lines that were on the ground, and claimed to have restored electricity to 60 homes. I am happy for them. They say it will double today and now there are many contractors and help on the ground so we are sure hoping to be with power today. I was hoping I was going to wake up to a light on but no such luck. We had a severe storm blow thru here yesterday with lots of lightening so I am sure that held them up. Have to wait and see what today brings!! This is not fun, and the bad part is this process does not seem to be getting any better. The management and whom ever else that has anything to do with this is sorely lacking. One would thing after all these years they would have a system in place that works and it would be a well tuned process but it is NOT!!!!

Whatever this forum told me to do

    this.

anyone, with a family, that intends to stay in this general area needs a backup generator...AND A PLAN.

    those 15kw units are awesome.

If you have natural gas, generators are an EASY answer.

If you don't have nat gas....plan to store some (30-50 gal) gasoline - safely.

yes, we have a 20kw standby nat gas unit.
We installed that beautiful gal in 2009 after IKE.
used it 3-5 times so far.
It uses 5w-30 - just like the tundra....so I always have oil for it. and I keep 4 oil filters in the garage. same filter as '06 sequoia.

it has a non-smart transfer case. I'm thinking about upgrading to the fancy load-shedding transfer case.

Costco has our briggs & stratton 20kw unit for ~$5k. on the shelf.
it will cost ~$5k to install.

stand alone gensets, like the 15kw, are around $2-3k?
you'll need the transfer switch installed...$2k?

    in short, be the sheepdog.

oh...and keep a weapon on your person & ammo stocked.

Do you know anyone reliable who can do an install for 5K? I couldn't find anyone. Everyone I contacted was around 7-10K for the install.

I have the portable Champion 100520 Generator Inverter setup but I was outta of the country and my son had no idea how to plug it in and start it.

    http://exiled.ddns.net/downloads/generator/CHAMPION.pdf

I am interested in a standby version.

    <keep in mind, I'm thinking in 2009 dollars here>

7-10k is high for install + labor.
unless maybe your gas is on the OTHER side of the house opposite of electrical box.

    like I mentioned ~5k for genset & transfer switch + $5k install.

$2500 was to run the damn gas line 12ft.
$2500 was to run the electricals +install transfer switch.

hell, even Home Depot was selling the 22kw Generac for $13k...fully installed.

these guys installed mine ~2yrs ago. they did my maint & checkup when I bought the house.
    I'd recommended them.

    Nailed it, bud.

Paid a little over $2k for the Duromax and I've gotta damn good electrician who don't poke my eyes out so it ran about $300 to install the inlet and interlock kit. I've got more ammo than I can shoot and I'm locked n loaded. Anyone who comes thinking they're desperate enough to take what I got, is gonna get a warning shot (for court purposes) but the next one will send em to whatever god they choose.

    yup.

many a man has suffered the law by giving a "warning shot".

TX law says "shoot to stop the threat".

    not, shoot to warn.

So I guess fire in the hole then......
I read/watch a video (I think made by police or similar function) that when you draw your weapon, you are not making a threat, you are to "end" the threat to save yourself.
Might be a bit rough, but I think it does have some truth in it, it is easy to draw a weapon but if you have no intention of using it, why bother?
But also, mis-fire always happens...... I thought about having weapons in the house, but am un-sure how educated my kids will be, as hard as I try, not to be stupid about it and try and bring it to school or some shit like that.
Those things keep me up at nights.....

But again, kids..... that's the variable I am un-sure of. Hopefully I doing it right....

My wife and I follow the advice from Warrior Poet on that, which is to remove the curiosity. His philosophy is that kids get to guns out of curiosity and don’t respect the rules, so you tell kids that if they ever want to see them, just ask and you will show them, while in the bounds of adult supervision, to where you can monitor and mentor them on it.

I’ve done this with our three kids and can say it has removed all of that dangerous curiosity and they have respect for the firearms.

We keep all of our guns locked up in a safe, unloaded. I keep my P365X loaded and on me at all times. The rare times I don’t have it on me, it’s unloaded.

Exactly. The only one I can't fit into the safe is the 50 cal but none of my kids can lift and handle that, that's for sure :) I can take it apart and fit it in but I am to lazy
