Hey everybody, I am new to the forum. I hail from MN.
I know there has been a million of these posts and a lot of guys come here for advice when looking at getting their first tundra, but any advice would be very much appreciated. I currently have an 05 f150 I have only owned for a year and a half and it is the absolute biggest pile of junk I have ever owned, and I have owned lots of junky vehicles haha. Anyways, thousands of dollars later and I am in need of a reliable vehicle and of course I want another truck, done my research and am leaning towards a tundra, for that reason. 07 and a few years newer fit my budget. I just really want something reliable that I can count on for years to come. It will be my daily driver and I will have a commute so I will be putting on the miles. I understand it’s a used vehicle so there will be things that come up. I got my eye on a few but this one really catches my eye. 2010 with 164k miles. Sr5 4x4. From a local Toyota dealership. The miles do scare me. They want 14,500. I looked around the exterior and took a few glances underneath and saw zero rust. Interior is pretty dang clean too. Looks like it spent a lot of its life in Virginia Beach. The past year or so in MN with a new owner who looks like put about 20k on up here. Any thoughts from anyone? I have not test drove it just because I like the way it looks so damn much I am afraid I will get attached to it to easily haha. Any advice for shopping for a used tundra in general years 07-11 would be very much appreciated. I don’t know to many tundra owners.

As long as it has clean service records and no rust looks like a good truck. That mileage for this 5.7 is just breaking it in. Have a neighbor with this same year model with the same features as this truck with just over 300k miles. That is what made my purchase so easy as my neighbor has not had one issue with it since he bought it new. Regular maintenance and service is key though. If that checks out and no rust congrats on your Tundra!

I’d say shop around some more.

I got my 2012 in 2014 with 20k miles on it for 23k OTD. The low price was because it was a 4.6L (I had no idea at the time...I was too enamored with the price point and the cleanliness of the vehicle/spotless history)

That being said, it’s served me well except for one hiccup - the dreaded AIP issue - but, for a truck I’ve had for 75k, three state residences, one major flood where I drove through water up to my headlights, some fun times on the trails to the cabin, a mountain trip, and a foiled theft attempt, one hiccup is pretty dang good.

I’d definitely see if they have the cam tower leak or a history of AIP issues.....other than that, I’d say you can’t go wrong. Besides 100k+ is considered the “break in” period for Toyota’s!

    Good luck with your search!

200K miles here, 5.7L drives like new. I am a mechanic, been around cars all my life, take my advice with a grain of salt, but Fords and GMs are biggest pieces of shit ever., you wouldn't believe what i have to repair on a daily basis. There's a few lucky ones that do last a bit but the majority of them fall apart much much earlier than Toyotas do. Resale is also horrendous, if you don't like it then you get next to nothing when it comes time to sell, Toyotas will always hold their value.

I have a 2011 with 128000 on it. Have put 20k on it and only have put gas and change oil. 4.6. Haven't towed with it, yet. Average 18+ on the highway and 16 round town and if you dont jump on that, I will!

Don't let the mileage scare you, I bought my '07 for cheap when it had 270K.
It needed maintenance work, but there is zero rust and it's close to rolling past 288K now.

Bought my 07 with 188k on it & now I'm approaching 238k in just over 2 years. AIP bypass & starter are my only "big" repairs.

Keep looking don't be sold on just that one. The worst deals I encountered on my tundra search was from 2 Yota dealerships.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
You might be able to find it a little cheaper than that elsewhere. Overall, I would not be too obsessed with mileage as long as the maintenance records look good. I would stick with 2009-2013, as most of the issues with the new model were hammered out by then.

    https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Tundra/

I would also check the cam towers for leaking oil, if it is leaking, that would be a hard pass.

Hopefully you have already checked ToyotaOwners.com, input the VIN to see the recalls and TSBs that are outstanding for any Tundra you find.
Next, aftermarket headlights look cool, but don't last quite as long as OEM, so that may be a repair in a year or two.
Everyone else has brought up the other items to watch for on our trucks. I had an 07 that had 190,000 on it, lost it to a drink driver, and my new one is a 14 with 90000. There are 07s that had gone 1 millon miles and even one to drive through the California camp fire last year, still driving even though one door was welded shut by the heat and the fender liner and headlights/taillights were melted.

Everyone's posts are pretty spot on. Keep in mind a 5.7 4wd is not ideal for commutes FROM A GAS MILEAGE perspective. You may find better prices, then again one might be a "gotta have" truck. Regardless, you'll love the durability and curse the low tech. Leave some $ for a new NAV/Head unit and your set.

    Hey there from Virginia!:mudding:
Make sure to test drive it when you can see the headlights. Those projector aftermarket headlights are, from my experience, not great. Mine were terrible and I had to turn around and get OEMs. It is a great looking truck, but might find a cheaper one you like just as much if you shop around a bit. Good luck! Let us know what you decide!

Thank you, I will let you guys know what I decide on. And sf13 thanks for letting me know about Toyotaowners.com. I’m going to plug the vin in and see what’s up.thats an awesome resource. And good to know about the aftermarket headlights not being as good. My search has been slow, it’s proven difficult to find ones i am interested in in my price range.

That one looks pretty nice but I’m sure you could find a great deal on Craigslist (if you can cash out on something). You’ll love the Tundra especially coming from an f150. My Dad has over 300k on his with between $1-2k in maintenance over the last 100k. There are loads of 5.7 tundras with half a million to a million miles on the original engine and tranny. As far as reliability goes for v8 trucks the Tundra blows everything out of the water

Edit- just saw you already got one. Looks extremely nice! Love the clean factory look as opposed to the first you looked at. Congrats!
