Help please ?! 2002 Tundra cranks but shuts off after electrical work

    I have a 2002 Tundra and was replacing the front seats (driver power and passenger manual bucket seats). The seats were from a 2005 so the wiring plugs didn’t match up. I cut the plugs off and wired them directly. Everything worked on the drivers power seat and cranked up and ran, but then I found out the seatbelts were different. So I disconnected wiring, and changed the seatbelt ends on the seat side. I had forgotten to disconnect the battery this time and as I was reconnecting the wires, the two power wires for the seat motors arced between each other. I then disconnected battery again and finished wiring. Reconnected wiring and seat worked correctly. But then cranked the engine, it fires up, but shuts off immediately after. Checked all the possible fuses, especially the 30 amp Power fuse that feeds the seat motor and all were good. Everything works but it won’t stay running. Fires up, but shuts off immediately. Another issue is that the battery may be going bad. I’m gonna test the battery tomorrow as I thought it may be a security system issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

    It sounds like a safety circuit was affected by the arcing, which is killing the engine. Try posting your question in the Ask The Toyota Mechanic thread. There are a couple of pretty sharp retired Toyota techs that monitor that thread:

    You should ask in the 1st gen thread as well but if you had the battery disconnected it may need to relearn idle. Give it a little bit of gas when starting (not too much) and see if it'll run then let back off after a few seconds and it could idle. Had this on a GM product just the other day.

    It might have something to do with the Anti-Theft Engine Immobilizer. See if the flashing red key goes off when you put the key into the ignition.

    After a little more digging, I think the issue is from have the battery disconnected. Someone else mentioned the ecu can “forget” how to operate and it just needs to run to relearn how to calibrate everything. I cranked it up, kept giving it a little gas and eventually it idled on its own. I’m going to drive it more this afternoon and I bet it will even out how it runs back to normal. I have an 02 4Runner that did this one time on battery change and I didn’t know what was going on. Thanks for the help!
