Help Confirming Good Truck Trailer Match

    Hi was hoping if we could get some help confirming that this truck trailer is a good match. Seriously considered going to 3/4 ton, and test drove many, but we just love our Tundra too much so trying to match the trailer to the truck. Here are the numbers:

    Tow Vehicle: 2010 Tundra 4X4 DBL Cab 5.7L with factory tow package
    6 inch lift, 60,000 miles, excellent condition
    VIN specific tow capacity 10,300, Payload 1,640 (I know there is controversy re VIN numbers vs. sticker numbers but after talking to 2 Toyota dealerships, I am comfortable going with VIN)

    Toy Hauler: 2020 Cruiser Stryker ST-2313
    Length 27 ft 6 in
    Hitch Weight 860 lbs
    Gross Weight 11260 lbs
    Dry Weight 6740 lbs
    Cargo Weight 4472 lbs

    4 Dirt Bikes to go in the back of the Toy Hauler: 800 Pounds

    Family of 5 in the Cab plus dog: 850 pounds

    Cargo: Includes regular clothes, food, small Yamaha generator, and usually 2 10 gallon gas cans

    Will say that in addition to taking dirt bikes out, we do a lot of off road/disperse camping trips.

    This is how I figure i:
    Tow Limit -
    (6,740) Trailer
    (800) Dirt Bikes
    (1,000) Cargo, propane etc)
    ______________________
    8,540 - well under tow capacity of 10,300

    Payload-
    (850) Hitch weight
    (850) Cab Cargo (with empty bed)
    _______________________
    1,700 Payload (I know 60 over, so maybe we will go on a diet)

    What do you guys think? Is this a reasonable set up? Or do we have to go to a 3/4 ton.

    I think it’s too much for your truck to safely tow. For the payload you’ll still need to add in the weight of driver and passengers and anything else you throw in the bed. Going is the easy part, it’s stopping that much weight in an emergency that could be an issue. JMO.

    Too big for a 1/2 ton pickup! Add in your 6 inch lift and that is just scary.

    I'll third that this is too much weight to pull on a regular basis. I'd have no problem doing it once or twice, like if I was borrowing the trailer from a friend, for a shorter trip, but there's no way I'd want to do a long road-trip, or regular trips with that rig. It's just too close to the limit to be comfortable. This is easily 3/4 ton territory.

    I'm trying to understand the thinking here. :confused:

    If the OP hadn't stated the gross trailer weight (11620 lbs), just the tow load (8540 lbs), would the answers still be the same? I'm thinking the 6" lift is the problem, unless there is a statutory requirement for tow vehicle/trailer ratings.

    @France41 , that "(850) Cab Cargo (with empty bed)" you've allowed has to include the "family of five in the cab plus dog". You're also going to need to allow another 100 lbs or so for a weight distributing hitch.

    Edit: Another comment I would add is given the Tundras payload limit, I would not simply assume 10% of your estimated trailer weight as the tongue weight. I would actually weigh the tongue of the loaded trailer. You need the tongue weight to actually be 10% of the loaded trailer weight, and not assume.

    I'm beginning to think every Tundra owner that tows needs a tongue scale.

    That's a good point. I only have a small pop-up trailer that weighs maybe 2000lbs when loaded, 2500lbs MAX. But my tongue weight is easily 300 - 350lbs, depending on how much I've loaded into the trailer, and where. That's 15% tongue weight. Still within safe limits, and on a small trailer like mine it doesn't affect payload on the truck too much. But 15% tongue weight on a 8540lbs trailer is 1281lbs. Now you've only got 500lbs of payload to work with on the truck. The people in my family weigh more than that!

    Just out of curiosity, what does your door sticker (if you have one) say your payload is and how different is that from the 1640 lbs that the VIN states?
