    Hello All,

My truck cranks but won't start like it wants to but the computer won't let it.

The other day I went to pump gas with my wife and I forgot to turn off the car completely and left the car in accessory mode. The AC was running. When I went to start the car, it would only crank. My battery was around 12.2v. I was able to get a jump and it started. As I was driving the 4hi and 4lo started to flash so I pulled over put in park and shut off the engine. It started back up with no codes.

The same day after driving around I went to the groceries store and when I came out the truck would not start. I figured it might be the batter since its 3 years old and got a new one. It did not start. So I cleaned the terminals really good and was able to get it to start.

Today I made a few trips within 30 minutes apart picking up kids and dropping them off at practice. When I sent to start it would not start but just crank.

Issue: Truck cranks like it want to start but it doesn't. When in accessories mode 4hi and 4lo is blinking. When i put the truck in neutral (not running) and engage 2wd to 4hi, I can hear it switch over. When I switch from 4hi to 4lo, can't hear it switch and then it starts beeping.

Triage: I checked the battery and even went to autozone to check the battery and it was 100%, this rules out the alternator. Searched online it said could be faulty wheel speed sensors. I checked connections all is good. Checked all fuses and in working condition. Replaced the terminal on the battery no corrosion. I don't have a obd2 reader.

Is it a bad transfer motor?

    What do I do?

Do you have a 2nd key and/or FOB? If yes you should try it.

    Not a flex fuel.

When i bought the truck 6 months ago, it only had one set of keys.

I have a 17 pro that was doing similar. It didn’t strand me but wouldn’t fire every crank. Changed the battery and it improved but still an issue. I cleaned the terminals then traced the chassis ground and cleaned and reattached. Haven’t had a problem since.
Hope it’s an easy fix for you.

I'd be checking all things ground and testing cables for internal corrosion. Also, checking connections is not the same as cleaning the terminals/posts with baking soda/water and a metal brush.

I scrubbed the terminals, then went out and bought new terminals.

Ill check the chassis ground and pick up a obd2 from harbor freight for 40 and check back in.

Update: I remembered I replace the air filter and cabin filter with some cheap Amazon brand the day this all started. I was reading that restricted air can cause the truck to crank and not turn over. I had cleaned my K&N air filter a couple days ago so I decided to put it back in last night. The truck started. Checked this morning again and it started.

I hope that was the issue but I will still check all the ground in the chassis for green. Wish me luck!

Helps if you remove the plastic first..

    :D:D

Seriously, though, that’s weird. I only use OEM filter but I haven’t seen that happen before. Maybe the air filter was just coincidental? How bad were the terminals? Either way, glad it works though!

    Hahahhaha!

I find it odd as well. I have started it a few time this morning separate times and no issue so far. I will keep triaging.

I would start by getting a cheap multimeter and checking the grounds. Usually when I have multiple Unrelated electrical issues it’s a ground issue.

It’s really easy to test for bad grounds.

A transmission neutral switch will cause the no start issue by the way.

Well, took the kids to football this morning and now were stuck at the game because it is doing it again. 4lo and 4hi blinking. Searched online and it says it might have to do with the 4x4 actuator or wires. Gotta go get an obd2 to get the codes.

Alright, is the alternator. No codes were detected. Took the battery to auto for charging it was good Battery but asked them to charge anyways. Got it to 13.5v and was able to start the truck.

Ordering alternator, serpentine, tensioner and pulley. Might as well.
