Gets hot as in over heating? If so it might be the thermostat stuck closed

No, gets hot as in won't start if you shut it off. Had to wait 20 minutes one day. Embarrassing.

    I don't follow.

Are you saying the motor gets too hot to start? Does it throw a check engine light? Does your temp gauge show over heating?

Sounds like “gets to normal operating temp, shut the truck off and it won’t start back up.”

Check your battery cables. If they have corrosion inside the wiring, the resistance increases when they get hot and there isnt enough juice to get the starter to crank.

Read this thread. No definitive answer but some ideas. I had a similar problem on my 07. Was a problem with a computer and the anti theft system. Only happened when at operating temp after being under load.
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/2007-starts-and-died.52015/

Edit, this is the engine cranking and either not starting or starting and dying.

    @Ryder, clarify please.
Are we talking crank no start, crank/start/die, or no crank?

Ignition/starter relay is bad. Friend had a few gm cars with the same issue, after driving a while even more so when it's hot out, once shut off the car wouldn't start, after sitting for a bit usually 15-20 minutes, would fire right up.

My '07 had a similar problem, a new immobilizer key chip and fuel pump fixed it at a little over 270k.

Fuel pump or fuel filter could be the culprit. I would definitely check fuel pressure, if its not high enough, injectors will not supply fuel.

Are you saying engine wont turn over (as in dead) or won't fire up while turning over engine?

I had that issue on my camry. Turned out to be the starter. I could drive it 2 miles up the road and it was enough that it appeared the battery was dead when turning the key. Once it cooled off, it would start like normal. I replaced the starter after some Internet research and that fixed it.

Temp gauge never goes above 1/2. I wish Toyota could manage a digital gauge, they have been available for 30 years at least. Throws no code, and the battery is new and it cranks, it just wont start.

Thanks, I will try that key thing. Don't understand why it only does it when hot, however.

If it cranks and does not start you are missing either fuel or spark. Verify which one is missing and then you can start trouble shooting in the right direction.

Do you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key on prior to cranking the truck? If not they expected to fail at around 7-10 years.

This is your issue. For some reason, when it's hot, you are missing either fire or fuel. Since you said it's cranking, just not firing, then it's definitely not the starter. My guess it's missing spark but you will need to figure out which.

I have never heard the fuel pump. It is located in the tank. I will have to wait for next year to check, we are into the fall, and it won't get hot again until next June at least. Thanks for the suggestion.

yeah mine only had 70k on it when i happened must have been prior owner that loaded the keys up. but it did about the same thing crank and no fire... do you just turn the ignition once and just let it do the one touch crank or do you hold the key in start position while it cranks? the ignition is a one touch system will crank till start or go for i believe five seconds or till key is switched off or back to acc...

defiantly have someone check it with tech-stream cause it was not throwing any codes when mine did it... just waited 10 minutes to retry starting. the code that did show was key relearn failure.
