Anyone else find their truck shifts really hard from reverse to drive. When I shift into the drive the truck almost lurches forward an inch or so.

Sorry if this has been posted before

My TRD pro did it. Hated it. Only thing that would make it less is after cold start, let it idle long enough for rpm’s to drop

I experienced this off and on for the first 5k or so. And then it just smoothed out. I think its just gears wearing in.

Yes - and I agree with DrZ as to the cause plus keep the foot brake applied for a second or two after the gear lever is shifted. It is more pronounced when engine and trans is stone cold.

It does it even when warm. I remote start and idle for 10 minutes before driving my daughter to daycare before work. It does it leaving day care as well when the engine is completely warmed up from idling and being driven to daycare.

This makes me feel a little better. I will be mentioning it at my first oil change

    Too many, but not enough....
on my 21 i found that the process of parking the truck really affected how it shifted out of reverse the next time I drove it. If you just slam it in Park and walk away all the weight of the truck is on the tranny. If you shift in neutral, apply the parking brake, then put in park, it shifted really smoothly out of reverse the next time I drove it.

I’m not sure if this is the same problem but I have noticed if I am rolling when I shift from R to D I will get a lurch or similar movement. Once I made sure I came to a full stop before shifting to drive the problem stopped. My 05 Sequoia was the same way. I think it is because there is no delay or mechanical slop/play when we put it in drive. So if we are rolling it is going to react badly because we are telling the drivetrain to go forward when the vehicle is moving backward. This is specific to after the vehicle is warmed up. A cold start fast idle gear change should lurch some. Maybe think of it this way. If your vehicle is warmed up sitting in neutral, next push on gas a little and then put it in drive or reverse. It’s not going to be a smooth transition. It has been less noticeable on domestic vehicles I have owned I think because they don’t have as tight a tolerance in there design. Thats part of why domestics generally don’t last as long. They are built to a lower tolerance standard. Hope this makes sense mechanically.

I believe the 3rd gens apply the parking break automatically

I do this everytime and still feel a hard shift. I will reverse. Come to complete stop. Apply full pressure to brakes and then shift to drive. I still feel a big clunk.

Hoping this doesn't turn into an issue. I love the truck otherwise and am yet to come across any of the more common issues like the drivers side mirror noise

This does not sound good, definitely take it to dealer. It's probably not supposed to do this.

Are you still having this issue? I have a 22 sr5 and notice it on my truck. I have about 2,000 miles on mine

I notice mine the most when I’m first starting the truck up in the morning. I will let it idle until rpm’s go down and then when I shift it into park, the truck will lurch forward even when parking brake is applied. If I shift into reverse and back out of my driveway and then shift to park there is still a lurch, but not as bad. Then when pressing on the accelerator it takes it a second or two to slip into gear. Is this familiar with anyone else that drives a new gen tundra?

There is a free dealer repair available for this per a TSB to reprogram the TCM.

Thanks. I know I said shift to park but I meant to say when I shift into drive there is a lurch. Really only happens when it’s been sitting over night or for several hours.

Hate to shift gears (no pun intended) but has anyone experienced a whooshing/whirling sound coming from the AC when you’re driving? When I’m stopped or just idling it doesn’t do it. Only when accelerating. Almost sounds like something from the engine, but when I turn the whole fan system off it stops as well.

110 was done at the same time for the cold start clunk.

Mine does this as well. I notice that it goes away after the initial lurch into drive. But on the first cold start it lurches forward or backwards. Dealer said it’s normal… but idk.

I was wondering if this was just a truck thing because my Hyundai sonata, Hyundai Santa Fe and Highlander does not do this.

I had to get the TSB for the 22-23 models done to my 2024. Had the same issue I Cannot recall the TSB hope someone can chime in soon. But it did fix the issue of the lurching and clunking.

I have a ‘24 and haven’t experienced anything like this.
Definitely bring it to the dealer and tell them to investigate.
If it feels wrong, then it probably is wrong.
    I hope it’s a simple fix.

Went to the dealership and had a technician look at the car, he said that the truck is fine and there won’t be issues with the transmission due to the lurch.

You mentioned lurching on start up. Like truck lurches forward in park when starting? Or just from shifting from reverse to drive

shifting from reverse to drive. Rocks me more than I imagine being normal. Funny thing is it isn’t as pronounced this morning.

I swear man i showed my service manager the TSB for the 22-23 model trucks on the clunk and hard shift from reverse to drive. He had his senior tech update my trans and do the neutral recall at the same time. I would back out of my drive way go from reverse to drive truck would jump and clunk into drive. Sounded awful and that TSB fixed it.

Looked at my paper work tsb 111 was what was applied to mine. And the neutral recall from short time ago. The reverse to drive jolt was reduced to a normal feeling. If you do not let it warm up the high idle will only amplify the effect.

I have had the same "R-D lurch" behavior so I was interested when this thread popped-up. It was most notable after a cold-start. I recently had the "drive forward in neutral" recall completed and it seems to have resolved the "R-D lurch". Hope that helps...

I have the same issue on cold starts. Either from P to D or R to D. Figured it was normal and just deal with it.
