have a 2017 sr5. Is it possible to just buy led bulbs and change out the halogen bulbs without needing to buy whole new led units for the headlights and fog lights?

It is possible to just replace the bulbs but you probably wont be happy with the results. And some LED bulbs will have hyperflash issues and need resistors. Then there is the fact that the halogen housings you have are not meant for LED bulbs, so the light output pattern will not be right.

Best bang for the buck is to switch to the factory TRD Pro LED headlights, and you will need the harness from @iHacker

It is a great upgrade and worth the money.

Does that go for just headlights or both head and fog?

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
The hyperflash applies only to turn signal lights - steer clear of putting non-OEM LEDs there and that issue won't exist. Some of the better brands have designed their LEDs to work in conjunction with halogen reflectors - the bulb just needs to be oriented (rotated) to take advantage of those and all is better than before.

That is the headlights. I did the same swap.

For the fogs, you can swap for factory LEDs too or there are nice aftermarket led fogs. Or just do bulbs for the fogs, they usually fare better with LED bulb replacement vs for the headlights when it comes to issues or bad light pattern.

When I installed the LED headlights, I just swapped some LED bulbs into the stock fog light housings and have had good luck. I used auxbeam, they have been fine and match the color of the headlights and light pattern is good. Just use quality bulbs vs something off ebay.

If I try replacing the bulb for the headlight it would just be for the beam not the turn signals. Figured this could hold me over till i save up for the whole swap later on
