Anyone ever dealt with a vehicle being totaled due to hail? I am getting my first inspection tomorrow and I'm worried they may total it. Other than cosmetic, any downfalls to buying it back? It only has 116k, so should still last awhile. I have heard they do not salvage the title for hail damage.

Never had experience buying one back from the insurance company but I would jump on it. Tell everyone you got the golf ball aerodynamic package.

So far at least 6 others I work with have had theirs totaled, most body shops are wanting to cut the roof off and replace, I did know that was a thing, but I'm sure with my sunroof, that will jack the estimate up.

Not sure what state you are in, but buyback should be fine if you know your vehicle, and plan to drive it until either it drops or your drop, whichever comes first.
Now, the bad part, assuming all cosmetic damages, you are gonna hate the insurance rates because it has been deemed totaled. Insurance company does not care how it was determined totaled, only that if it was or not. Some insurance would not even touch it, while some may but at premium+200%.
I am sure with cosmetic damages, it should be structurally sound and fine to drive for another 2M miles, but insurance will argue otherwise.

For my '15 Sequandra I got $5500 for what I think is Minor hail damage - I can hardly seen any yet they paid out on the spot. Did not hear any talk of it being near totaled. I think you'll be just Fine (unless it looks hammered by 100 construction guys for an hour).

Toyota uses consumed tin cans for the sheet metal. PDR is so easy on them. I pulled a few larger dents, don't bother with the small hail damage.

It was just under baseball size hail. I didn't think about the insurance, I just assumed I would have to drop it to liability. KBB shows it to be worth about 25-26K, not much out there that is decent at that price.....

It’s common to get $5-10k in damage in a hail storm in Colorado. Unless it broke glass or really wrecked some lights and trim, it’s tough to go over ~$12k in damage on a late model Tacoma. They’ll pay a certain amount per panel before they opt to replace and paint panels, which isn’t going to cost $20k.

If it does total, value is usually claimed to be roughly 20% less. If it doesn’t and it’s repaired, there’s really no notable value hit except explaining the event on the carfax report should the next owner care.

I had a 2010 Tacoma that I got a $7k hail check for (and it was worth maybe $17-$18k at the time). I waited for the post storm rush at the PDR shops to die down and paid $1,500 cash to let the shops trainee fix it. He did great, so I drove it a few more years and then sold it and as a truck that essentially nothing had ever happened to. That extra $5,500 in the pocket was nice.

We lost a vehicle last year to hail. After some math, future issues with resale, and not wanting to drive around a golf ball for the forseeable future we let it go. That is why we insure vehicles. Now we have the same style vehicle, upgraded, and so much happier.

Oh, if you decided to keep it, make sure it did not go through the paint and then rust.

i had a chevy 1500 hit worse then that, insurance sent it to paintless dent repair and for the life of me I could not find a single blemish after, they even fixed dents I had there previous to the hail. $5500 reapir on a truck worth $7k at most.

That's nothing. A weekend, enough beer and PDR kit under $100 will fix most of the damage. Toyota is a tin can: easy to dent, easy to fix.

Insurance estimate was a little over 14k, but they forgot to add the windshield and the cowling. I take it to the shop on Monday. I guess I will see how bad they hit me with supplemental damage.

    Looks fantastic.

I had 6k worth of PDR done on my truck from a hail storm last year, no broken glass and they removed every single dent and door ding, looks factory fresh again...almost.

Damn, that truck looks great, I wouldn't wish hail damage on anyone, but thats actually a mixed blessing if you ask me.
