I salvaged a full size vault door from a remodel of the House of Representatives.
Never could use it. Set it up with braces so that it swung on the hinges, figured out the combination and sold it for a $1,000.

Unless you go real high end with Fort Knox or even go higher end with graffunder they are pretty much going to provide decent security. I have the liberty fatboy extreme, 1000 pounds, bolted to the floor and I believe 11 gauge steel all the way around. Rated for I believe 75 or 90 minutes of fire rating. My next safe is going to be a graffunder though, they are extremely expensive but are extremely well built and you would be hard pressed to find anything better outside a bank vault.
But if you want something to keep people out for a period of time you can’t go wrong with something like Liberty. I’d stick to 11 gauge steel or thicker, so the higher end models. And as others have stated by bigger than what you have and want so you can grow into the safe

I could see that if one doesn't know how to use a torch.

There’s a lot to be said for having weapons in multiple locations hidden but accessible.

I couldn't remember at first, mine is the Liberty Centurion 12... as in it's supposed to hold twelve long guns.

I have 6 in there (unless I'm forgetting something) and even with half of what it says it'll hold I have to arrange them just right to fit.

Like you can't have two with scopes next to each other. The only way you're fitting 12 in there is if they're blowguns.

    Beware the attack cat.

Don’t overthink a safe. Just get one that’s big enough. If someone actually gets into ur safe it was an inside tip. I got mine so that the kids friends would never be tempted. I also love it to keep important documents in. If ur whole house is on fire you have bigger problems. If your that worried just insure em. I know zero people that have had someone come into their house with an angle grinder or torch.

Nothing beats a walk-in vault. As far a safes, don't scrimp here! Bigger is better!

Sadly, if my home gets broken into and they have the time, all the tools are there.

Man this is a great idea. If I keep my mean ass cat in the safe the thieves would be in for one hell of a surprise

This is a really common issue. For example, I have a plasma cutter good for 5/8” steel 40 feet away from my safe. :)

Most safes aren’t about securing from determined thieves, but rather the appearance of security and securing from kids. In a lot of cases a 700 lb consumer grade safe is a better choice than a 2000 lb mid grade safe. The former is something that most homeowners can move if needed and they all bolt down.

Get the largest capacity you can fit. You’ll find lots of uses for it in addition to guns. A fire resistant document bag is a good idea too for things like passports, deeds/titles, and insurance documents. This way if you need to bug out for a weather event, just grab and go — it’s together and double protected.

If you really want the higher grade safe, go to a safe shop and talk to them. Most ppl like the mechanical locks better at that level, and they get used safes frequently that they resell (at least around here). If you find a used one on your own, you will probably want their help to move it so they are a good contact to have.

Just remember, you need to have good gun insurance even if you have a safe. Most fire proof safes keep your guns from burning up, but a lot of moisture is released inside the safe during the fire. If you can't get your safe drilled and opened immediately the guns will rust and be a loss. If your house just burned down you really are not in the position to get your safe opened by a locksmith and break all your guns down and clean completely. Put your important papers, documents and files in a fire proof container in your safe and they should be good no matter how intense the fire is. I don't mind giving up the space for a Sentry Fire Proof Container for my papers. Good luck.
