So I was wondering if it was legal to put a transfer tank in the bed of the ol girl, 2012 rw, and use it for gasoline. All the transfer tanks that I can find are for diesel only. I am in good old Illinois and can't seem to find an answer. The only reason I want a transfer tank is because I am lazy and don't want to stop for gas when pulling the travel trailer.

I'm pretty sure it is illegal to gravity feed your fuel from a transfer tank. You are going to have to stop to fill from the transfer tank anyway. if you want to be non-stop, you'll need a tank replacement like a transferflow tank.

Honestly, you can always try calling one of the POEs. The ones here are pretty helpful, and even if they don't have an answer they might be able to point you to a resource to find it.

Sorry for not clarifying, a transfer tank is what I thought I said. That's just what we always called them on the farm. It's a tank with a pump on it, that is bolted down in the bed. We use them for diesel. I did call the IDOT office, they seem to be taking their sweet time getting me the answer. The local DMV office wasn't much help.

Bummer. Do you have a tank picked out? If so, you might reach out to the vendor/manufacturer and see if they can provide any guidance.

I'm jealous of your payload rating. My truck can barely stay under CCC when towing my TT with the 38 gal tank full.

If you have to stop to fill from the bed gas tank why not just stop at a gas station?

Being able to pick and choose where to get gas based on prices helps with budgeting. Small towns usually have better pricing than bigger cities so if I can bypass the higher prices it's a plus. I understand I will use the same amount of gas reguardless of where I go, but when traveling considerable distances one way, the budget is always in the back of my mind.

I agree with Adam. When towing my boat with my 1st gen I would carry two 5 gallon cans to make it to the river. Stopping anywhere reasonable before that, the gas was more expensive and inconvenient. When the gas light came on I would be in the middle of nowhere. Pull off an exit. Dump 10 gallons of Costco gas in and back on the road in under 10 mins. Poor man's version of a transfer tank.

Adam, you may want to calculate how many inflated price gas stops it would take to pay off that transfer tank. I know they aren't cheap. Maybe consider putting a hitch carrier with 4 gas cans on your TT bumper. Or in the bed if you have the room.

It adds a bit of versatility as well. You can help others on the way, use it to fill the lawnmower, douse the firewood for a proper *FWOOOOOM!!* when your buddy tosses a match on the camp fire, etc. You don't need eyebrows.

Haha. I've removed eyebrows with a gas can too.

The reason is no one offers antrinsicly safe 12 volt gasoline pump. With that said, the chances of igniting the gasoline from the pump motor brushes is very slim. Still not leagal in California.
