Still looking for a 05/06 AC, but in 2WD only and its turned into a bit of a 'unicorn chase'.
Reality of market is a s##t-ton of DCs for every AC of Gen1. Kinda of a surprise, but im guessing Toy built 10 DCs for every AC during the epoch.
Add to that, of the ACs, best units available happen to be 4WD; other than xtra weight and xtra mechanical to maintain or repair, whats downside of buying a 4WD unit [if not intended end use].?

Id be ok w/extra weight [lower mpg] and i might occasionally use 4WD at launchramp eventho boat + trailer under 4000# [never needed it before].

    So, 4WD downsides then...
    Smaller turn radius?
    Premature Tire/suspension wear issues?
    Extra weight-roll resistance [lower mpg]?
    Waay lower mpg v. 2WD?

Have seen a couple very nice units, of course at top end of asking, but also appear to be better maintained or lo miles. Seems like some bought the 4WDs thinking they wanted to go skiing [or had jobs over snow, ice, mud] but didnt actually drive them much once gas spiked over $4.
Looking at the 2WDs available here W of Rockies, few are lo-miles [under 200k] or taken care of; most of what im seeing are borderline 'abused' to 'bastard-ized'.
So, for my end use as a boat-puller, probly less that 100 mi/month but dont want next gen or even v6 tundra/tacoma.

    4WD ...

    Lower mpg
    Heavier
More maintenance (axles, diff and tc, etc.)
More gotta-dos (engage 4wd once a month for ~10 miles to keep it lubed)
    Expensive repairs
    Higher $$ buy-in amount

A lot of guys make do on here with 2WD to get into places. 4WD is a "nice to have" for a lot of people. But really think about whether you need it, IMHO.

I have both. The 2WD 2000 does great as a daily driver and for hauling my Waverunner.

Yeah, ive factored all that, and if truck is 'near new' vs. the 2WDs in current market, i wouldnt neccessarily exclude 4WD on cost diff only...
having said that, theyre all 'maintenance projects'.
Who knows, i might start skiing again at 70!

"A lot of guys make do on here with 2WD to get into places. 4WD is a "nice to have" for a lot of people. But really think about whether you need it, IMHO." yep, i wanna b in that group.
Dont really want it but if theyre the best overall condition of whats on market currently...
OTOH, I can wait it out til a 'minimal project 2WD' shows up.

Side note: Over my fieldwork career, i interpreted '4WD' to mean 'will get you stuck deeper and farther out'; no offense to the offroad crowd here.

A rust free nicely kept 4wd will also command a premium when you goto sell it to anyone from the rust belt.

Thx for all the replies. I'm likely making 4WD a last resort, but dont really see much disadvantage over whats been stated already: MPG and added mechanics to maintain. Always thot they had a larger turn radius than 2WDs; apparently not so w/Tundras.
Still hoping to find a good 2WD AC, but if a well maintained 4WD for the right price comes along...
