That just means use regular gasoline. Not for use of E 85. The flex fuel’s come with a yellow gas cap I think.

Whatever Costco runs for "regular" is what I get :) Not really sure what it is down here 83 or 85 maybe.

Just filled up its 87 octane at $2.4999

Interesting. I thought they made it obvious. Is the receptacle larger on the truck. Kind of like a diesel, their fuel nozzles are larger so you can’t stuff them into a gas engine. Although funny thing, my boss accidentally put regular gas in his diesel. I proceeded to LOL at him. But not until after he got it fixed.

I created a thread on this earlier. Here is the most important thing I learned from it:

Therefore, 87 is the minimum you should use in the Tundra. Also, the AAA has a great report about using top tier vs. other types of gasoline. This is why I only run 91 from Costco

Regular Mobile 1 or Chevron most the time, during hunting season I'll occasionally use ethanol free and definitely gets the best fuel range. One of my last cars had a built high compression motor and ran like complete ass off Arco premium fuel (late at night and nothing was open,) I won't use anything but top tier fuel now.

    What Is Top Tier gas?
In short, Top Tier gas provides higher quality fuel by increasing the amount of additives used to keep your engine clean and improve overall vehicle performance.

Gasoline quality is mainly determined by the amount of additives contained in the mixture. Fuel additives serve a number of purposes, but the most important type of additive prevents carbon deposit buildup in the engine. Carbon deposits can reduce fuel efficiency and engine performance and may also cause more serious issues, such as preventing your engine from starting when it’s cold.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set minimum standards for the concentration of additives in gasoline. Top Tier standards, which were developed through a partnership of eight major automotive manufacturers, require better quality additives in higher amounts than the minimum EPA standards.

You can learn more about these standards on the Top Tier Gas website and see a list of gasoline brands that are Top Tier certified on the Top Tier Licensed Brands page.

I get that the detergents clean the engine better, but what I’m finding about 87 vs 91 octane hasn’t convinced me it’s worth the extra $0.50 or whatever. Could you please elaborate?

Thats ethanol content. Cap says ethanol content no more than 15%. The shell station I go to has a disclaimer of ethanol < 10%.

The difference in octane is the ignition point. There's not enough of a difference between 87 and 91 to choose 91 over 87 on a naturally aspirated engine. I choose 91 because my Costco doesn't have 87.

To answer your question, detergents and octane rating go hand and hand, like peanut butter and jelly:

The right octane level for your vehicle

The recommended octane rating for most vehicles is usually octane 87, but be sure to check your vehicle owner’s manual. Ordinarily, a vehicle will not benefit from using an octane higher than recommended in the owner’s manual. However, some car models have high-compression engines and electronic controls, which are designed to benefit from the greater power output and improved fuel economy of high octane fuel. Since octane requirements can vary with operating and environmental conditions, your vehicle may need a higher octane fuel than recommended to prevent KNOCKING.

    What is Engine Knocking

Knocking in your engine, also described as pinging, can mean one of several problems. Some may be easily fixed while others may indicate major damage. The knocking sound often occurs when the air-fuel mixture is incorrect, which causes the fuel to burn in uneven pockets rather than uniform bursts. Left untreated, it can cause damage to the piston and cylinder wall. A knocking sound can also be caused by a lack of lubrication in the upper cylinder head area. This is typically a ticking sound that is created by valves and lifters that are loose or not receiving enough oil.

In general however, the most common cause of engine knocking is related to the engine's ability to operate efficiently. Noted below are a few of the common causes of ignition system and fuel related engine knocking.

Carbon Deposits Restrict the Efficient Burning of Fuel

Fuels for vehicles are required to have a carbon cleaning detergent, but they may not prevent carbon deposits from forming. As fuel mixes with oxygen, it is burned. Since gasoline and diesel are made up of multiple carbon molecules, the residual of carbon will form on valves, spark plugs, and other components involved in the combustion process. This reduces the amount of volume inside the cylinder and increases the amount of compression.

In most cases, using a special fuel injector cleaner or additive designed to clean carbon deposits on engine components can resolve this issue.

(Basically, if you have a vehicle that suggests using 87 minimum octane level and you run years of low tier gasoline through it, you will probably get a lot of carbon build up. To counter this carbon build up and have your engine run more properly, you will then need to get a higher octane level to have the same performance as before.)

(But if you use detergent top tier gasoline, you can use the minimum 87 octane that the manufacture suggests and have no real issues.)

(Some engines require using higher octane, because of the compression I.E. dodges 6.4 hemi, GMs 6.0
