Extremely hard to get on and off. Have to use a ton of force. Is a new gas cap the answer

    Are you throwing any codes?

And just because the dash light isn’t lit up doesn’t mean “no codes”, throw a scanner on it, any auto parts store chain will check for codes for free. I’m asking because if you have any EVAP codes, your purge valve may not be working and creating excess vacuum in the closed fuel system, which needs to be fixed if so.

No lights but I will take it to the store. First time I’ve opened it. Lots of pressure was released it seemed like when opened.

Your tank and its vapor/fuel lines are supposed to be a sealed system. It needs to maintain a specific amount of pressure. The gas cap is one pressure valve. But you have the ECU monitoring pressure in the closed system and there’s a purge/vent valve (as is the case in almost all EVAP systems) which will allow releasing pressure of the vacuum gets too high. If you are hearing hissing when removing the gas cap, it may suggest you have a purge valve problem. If so, you will (or should) have some kind of code set.

EVAP codes are quite often some of the most difficult ones to troubleshoot unless you have at least a general understanding of how EVAP works.
