I have a 2013 Tundra and am the second owner (2018). All maintenance is current by a private auto repair shop. My mechanic is recommending the BG 4X4 service to the tune of $690. ( he previously talked me into it after purchasing the truck.) I have about 91k miles on the truck. I rarely use 4 wheel drive and I don't tow a trailer of any kind. Is the use of BG fluids overkill? The maintence schedule only recommends a change in fluid if vehicle is driven on dirt or dusty roads. 95% of my driving is on paved roads. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or insights.

I doubt it needs anything, but I think a $690 4x4 service definitely
    isn’t needed. what is BG?

A simple drain and refill of the rear diff and transfer case should be plenty. I would go ahead do a partial drain and fill on the trans fluid too

you could do everything yourself in a few hours with minimal work and cost

Never heard of BG. And not sure what there is to service besides changing fluids which should be an hour of labor and like $100 in fluids.

I use BG products in my vehicles. specifically BG44K for fuel system cleaner and BG ERP and MOA. The ERP is basically a detergent that help to break up the oil deposits and grime that accumulates, you add it before an oil change and then let the truck idle for 10 minutes or so, then drain as usual. MOA is an additive that helps to keep the engine clean and also has friction modifiers. BG does offer a service where the tech hooks up 44K and pushes it straight into the injectors to clean out any deposits (44K is usually added to your gas when you fill up). I've had this done as well and it really helped to smooth out a rough idle I had on a BMW. Since these guys (BG) only make additives and not oil or transmission fluid, I would guess that this is just a basic Injector service plus ERP and anything else they have for your transmission like a cleaner product or maybe a conditioning package like Lubeguard or something. I've never used those products (I do use Lubeguard though). BG is a solid company and makes good products.

I would definitely ask what he is going to do and the products he will be using. Get the total breakdown and let us know.
