Hey all. Starting noticing a humming from my truck when I hit 60 mph and is louder the faster I go. First noticed a slight hum when I did an oil change 3,000 miles ago. First thought it was the new oil I was using. I changed my oil again 500 miles ago and still noticed it. Not much difference. As of yesterday it's pretty hard to ignore, especially at 70 mph+. Any ideas? My truck is doing 2,500 rpm at 70+ and I haven't noticed a similar hum at 2500 in other gears.

Is your steering shaft seal intact, or did it recently blow out, so you're hearing all the noise from inside the cab? There's a sticky thread on the subject, so you'll know what to look for and how to replace it.

Have you checked your wheel bearings?

Yeah I'm hearing it from the cab. Almost sounds like it's coming from the engine bay but that doesn't exactly help. No steering issues that I'm aware of.

Oh and no I haven't checked the wheel bearings yet although that is something I need to check. My wife rode with me last night and she said she didn't hear anything, but she's also a woman so I dont think they can hear car noises.

At the top of the forum list, under the 1st gen subforum, there's a box with "sticky" threads, those are the most-important threads we have, which answer probably 75% of the questions anyon could ever possibly have when they come here.

Notice the orange box, there is a scroll bar because there are a couple dozen of them. One is visible in this picture, "DIY Steering shaft seal" and it covers a problem many of our trucks have where engine bay noises are able to freely enter the cab. It can come on suddenly, when the seal disintegrates.
