Hi, new to the forum. Looking to purchase a 2002 tundra trd. Should I be concerned about frame rust issues. The truck is from Wisconsin. Thank you.

Only if you're purchasing it sight unseen. You either have a problem or you don't, one look underneath should let you know what you have. Its certainly a strong possibility coming from that area but it really just depends on the truck.

If it hasn't been replaced yes. Around the spare tire and front tires.

I live in Southern California where rust isn't an issue. I always bring a flashlight & large piece of cardboard to lie on so I can crawl under the vehicle & check it out underneath for rust & leaks.

What's the percentage of bad ones? I'm starting to have second thoughts about buying one.

completely depends on the area. My dad has an 02 that didn't have the frame replaced, and after 17 years in the MN salt, it's still just fine. my 2000 was not, and had the frame replaced. It's not as scary as people make it sound as long as you check it out before you buy. It'll be pretty obvious if it's a good or bad one.

Of trucks that spent their whole lives in states that don't salt their roads? 0% In trucks that spent a significant part (or all) or their lives in states that salt their roads? It varys widely. Just inspect before you buy or have someone you trust do it.

In your area there will be a lot of rusted ones. I wouldn't let it scare you away from at least looking though. These are great trucks so long as you don't buy one that's rusted.

Check post # 37 in the link below. It'll show clear pics of different stages of rust. The link should take you directly to the pics. Again, you just need to inspect it first. If you don't think you're knowledgeable on the subject, see if you have a friend who is. Otherwise pay a knowledgeable mechanic or vehicle inspector to check it out for you. You can also post pics & get advise from here.

In the first pic, some visible rust, wouldn't stop me from buying, but start treating it right away. Second pic - move along. Third pic - run, don't walk.
