I just noticed some frame rust on my tundra. It looks surface level. What can I do to get rid of it/prevent

I use a 20k rpm right angle die grinder with a wire wheel to get rid of it and paint over it with a rust encapsulator like POR-15.

Need pics to understand how to remediate. Depends on whether it's surface rust, or more than that.

Pictures help to see how bad it is...

I used a wire wheel and brushed off as much as I could, then coated it with phosphoric acid, washed that off, let it dry, then repainted.

Encapsulation only works in places where the frame isn't laminated. I just clean the frame with a pressure washer, let it dry a week, then drown it with fluid film. Good idea to do the rear axle housing while you're at it, otherwise it will get a pinhole and lose oil.

There’s no evidence of delaminating (at least no pics OP has shown). If he says it’s only surface rust, I trust he knows better.

I just moved to Coastal Carolina about two years ago. I didn’t think about the rust at all

Is the truck new to you? If so I'd look up the big trouble areas on top of cross member, front boxes portion of frame, overlap where front and rear frame meet. Judging by that x-member I'd needle scaler and grease or fluid film. I wouldn't use POR before researching experiences on here with it.

It was my dad’s and he bought it “New” 2005-2006. I’ve had it in my name for about two years.

Based on those pics I don't see anything massively disturbing, the tow hitch assembly is notorious for rusting out even on southern trucks, and that's a huge swath of what's showing in the 1st pic.

But either way, you've got a 2005. Even if you had enough rust to warrant a frame recall, your year isn't covered.

Yea the tow hitch is covered in rust, so what is the best COA to remove and protect against rust on these tundras? The truck is from Louisiana

I mean, If you're not driving on salted roads, and not dunking the ass-end into water on a regular basis, simply descaling off the rust you're showing and re-hitting it with matte or satin frame paint (Seriously, I've been in the south my whole life and Rustoleum outdoor satin black is all I've ever used!) is perfectly fine. That's just my 2¢. You can go overboard here, and POR-15/SilverBullet/Eastwood Encapsulate your frame, then woolwax it every other year, but I don't see any reason to for guys like us living in SC/GA/AL etc.

Make sure you at least knock the flakes of rust free first. The big thing you want to keep eyes out for is delamination, like ... you know how good fancy biscuits will peel apart in layers? Watch out for that. Or how some rock will chip off in flat chunks? Watch out for that. All I'm seeing in those pics is flaky rust, but purely superficial. I mean, I'd like better pics of what it looks like when you take a brush to it, and I think others would too, it'd give us a better idea. But seeing how much nicer the "typically bad" spots are, and how good the framerails look, I legitimately think that's superficial.

If it goes through I'd say so. If you were to tap it would it create a hole?
Can you see through any of those what appear to be pin holes?

I painted a trailer with that years ago and it rusted like crazy. Whatever they put in it for a "matte" finish seems to let road salt penetrate easier. I would just pressure wash it, let it dry a week and spray it with fluid film.

That’s flaking rust. The shadows make it look like there’s holes.

X2 on the Fluid Film. I also like Surface Shield, which seems more durable in my experience. Fluid film is more likely to wash off, so I think it's better for more protected areas like door cavities and inside rocker panels.
