Hi all, first time poster but long time reader of this forum. I'm hoping to get some input on my Tundra. It's a 2017 TRD crewmax offroad with under 50k miles on it.

I got into my first car accident recently (was completely stopped in traffic and rear ended by somebody going 65mph). The bumper was crushed and the right side panel had some damage too. The auto shop is saying there is frame damage, and insurance might total it (final decision still pending).

I love this car and am having a hard time letting it go. Before this, I'd get it detailed every few months and get it regularly serviced, and I've done everything to keep it in good condition. What do you think - does frame damage mean the truck is a total loss? Thanks in advance!

Stock, with a few cosmetic mods.
At that speed you’re lucky to be alive. I have no doubt there is substantial frame damage! Hopefully it gets totaled out.

You stopped and other car hit you squarely @65mph? Frame damage should be obvious.

To clarify, there definitely is frame damage, but I'm just wondering if frame damage entails totaling the car.

There was one car behind me (also fully stopped) that was between my truck and the vehicle that hit us (going 65mph).

Do you have any pictures? I would think it would take almost a catastrophe to total a 2017. Then again, labor is terribly expensive now.

Good looking truck. I would hope they would not total it over that, doesn't look terrible and it seems to be concentrated on one side. If it were mine, I would rather they just repaired it.

Thanks! Yeah I was honestly pretty shocked when they said it might be a total loss but I've also never dealt with frame damage before on a car

I’d look for another frame (they’re out there) chop the bad section and replace it with the donor (lots of work). Or swap out frames entirely (even more work but less customization).

Yes it means it's totaled and if the insurance co. says it isn't, insist that it is. You don't want it back with the amount of frame damage that comes from a hit at that speed.

I’d absolutely want my truck totaled if I was in an accident like that. Have you seen slow mo video of accidents? The amount of energy passing through is bound to compromise other things and that aren’t visually evident, and especially long term.

Fuck all of that. It's a 6-7 year old truck. Get another one.

My experience has been no matter how much or how little damage the vehicle will never be the same. I agree about the hidden damage.

Damn. Guy behind you doesn’t sound too lucky if he was pushed into your vehicle causing frame damage. He’s probably got injuries.

Hey all, thanks so much for your input! I really appreciate all these replies. It's been a chaotic few weeks dealing with the logistics after the crash.

It looks like insurance has decided to total the truck due to the cost of labor. This car does have significant sentimental value (family reasons). I'm debating whether I should buy it back from insurance because of the sentimental value, but I know that might not be feasible or wise...

One more question for you all -- how do you determine what price to settle the claim at? Insurance made an offer but I have yet to accept. In your experience, do you negotiate or take as is?

    Thanks a ton, everyone.
