Hey guys, first post on here so go easy on me. A few days ago while I had the pass. Side of the truck up ( Rotating my tires ) I looked up and saw a big Crack on the top of my strut or shock ! How soon do I need to replace this ? And what brand do you guys recommend? I will change out both fronts but want to know what you guys think . My truck isnt lifted just has a Very heavy front tough country bumper. I'm not paying the dealer another penny. I noticed this 1 week after their "Extreme Saftey Inspection " Please help me out yall thanks! 20191119_171810.jpg 20191119_171810.jpg 20191118_171440.jpg 20191119_171810.jpg 20191118_171440.jpg

That’s the shock body. Ur probably pay due for an upgrade and one that will handle ur aftermarket bumper. @Toytec Lifts

I may be mistaken but that looks like the plastic "boot" for the stock shocks. If so, it's not a huge deal. On my truck the actual shock body is in the lower half that bolts to the arm, and the upper part the hat bolts to is the rod end protected by the plastic cover.

Looks like the plastic cover to me too. Likely nothing wrong with the shock.

Anyone used Rock Auto parts ? I'm in love with this truck I've only had her for 4 months and its my first Tundra. Between the truck and my wife's brand new Camry money is tight so looking for affordable and reliable parts . I appreciate the feedback guys

Rock auto is fine, I order parts from them all the time. But honestly if the shock isn’t leaking I wouldn’t replace it.

I bought the truck used with 110,000 miles on it. The service history was spotty at times so I'm just paranoid. Plus upgrades cant hurt right? Or can they...

They’re usually ok to do. But since you’ve got all that weight up front I’d be looking into some stiffer coils and bilsteins or the likes.

If those are the original black shocks, you are past due for new shocks. I like Bilstein 4600 series, but there are other Bilstein shocks that are popular.

5100s with some stouter coils would probably benefit him more just because of the bumper.

That’s all I’m seeing in the pics too, the dust shield crack.

Replacing your shocks because of age and mileage isn’t a bad idea, but there is no urgent safety issue showing up here. How does it ride / handle on rough road, bridge transitions, etc?

If the ride is still decent, you have time to let the bank account recover and get better replacements. El cheapo aftermarket shocks are never a good time.

Or the Bilstien 6112 kit. Not much more than buying separate shocks and coils.

I didn't know these existed, and now I see that they make a kit for my 4X4 2002!
