Thinking I blew up the rear gears of my 2000 Tundra. Axle shaft looks good.

Junkyard says Ford rear ends around 2000 will swap in.

    Any thoughts?

Should I buy new gears or risk used. What do most people buy.

    Thanks for the feedback

I find that hard to believe but if you have a 4x4, the rear gear ratio needs to match the front.

I’ll chime in and say no I don’t think they won’t fit and they just want your money

Other than that I have no experience on the matter

I’ve never heard or read about using Ford stuff in a yota

I agree. He said 3.73 instead of 3.90 and how often do you really use the 4wd. Thinking he's blowing me s**t

So I want larger tires soon. Should I just upgrade to higher gears front and rear

By "swap in" it sounds like an easy bolt on, but I don't think its as easy as he thinks.

I doubt the flange at the pinion is the same. I doubt the location for leaf springs is the same. I'm sure the brake lines are different. Pretty sure Fords are 5 lug. Probably not the correct width, which may make alignment harder. Then there's ABS sensors.

But with the right tools, it will swap in.

What did you do to “blow up” your gears?

Just find a junk yard 3rd member that has the same gears.

Nothing from another manufacture just swaps in

Rear diff on my 2000 is toast as well. Not blown yet, but will soon. If you feel comfortable with used (everyone here suggested I go that way) they can be had. Ford swap I've never heard of, but I've owned my Tundra for under 2 years and this is the first time I've seen it mentioned here. I plan to keep my truck for a long while and have had bad luck with used parts. New OEM diff carrier...BIG $$ ($2150), but I have a warranty on it and it's brand spanking new. If the original one lasted 21 years, then I have another 21 to go on the new one IMO. I really prefer the Toyota quality vs. Ford, and I've owned Ford trucks. Best of luck to you!

Diablo... Just a left turn and pop. Previous owner was known for burnouts tho ;)

Found a 4 runner local for a grand. Is that the same width?

Having a hard time finding used 3.91 rear gears.

Make this easy on yourself and get a rear end for your truck. Not from another model or brand. Salvage yards and gear supply shops would be a good place to start inquiring. Also be helpful to know exactly what’s boogered in yours. That way you know what it is your trying to accomplish.

I'm seeing a few on car-part.com. Like you say, @1000-$1200 for the locking differential for one that is A rated. Some of them note that the housing is rusty, though. There's one in Phoenix for $1100. There are a bunch that want you to call for the price. Maybe one is located close enough to you to be practical.

ford rear end would likely not be a direct swap but can be done...

but ford wheel lug patterns are different.. so you'd need a different set of wheels for the back... negating any cost savings

Yeah, that would be a major WTF moment for me. I'd run, not walk away from that guy.
