    Hi,

New to the forum. Recently bought a new 2018 Tundra Crew Max Limited, 4x4 TRD Off-Road, Silver exterior, Black interior. Planning on keeping it stock except for TRD shift knob and want to add ESP long storage box.

Love the Tundra. Came from a 1994 Toyota Celica (my first car, still own and runs well) and 2007 BMW 335i coupe (total awhile back).

Was considering a 2018 GMC 4x4 SLT loaded, but thought the Tundra had a better ride quality and steering feel. Both good trucks though; was a hard decision.

My question: In the middle of designing a detached 2 vehicle garage for the back yard but not sure what type of door would be best. I want to be able to park the truck easily and without folding in the mirrors. The overall size of the garage is still in flux and kind of depends on the the door size (no more than 30x30 overall, want a pedestrian catwalk inside). Anyway, seems like the single dual door would be easier to maneuver in/out but two singles looks better. In either case what size would be ideal (but not ginormous). Also assume two CM tundras with no power folding mirrors for worst case fitment.

Single Dual: Would 16×8 ft be sufficient / easy to park in?
Two Singles: Would 8x8 ft be sufficient / easy to park in?

    Thanks

Welcome! I agree that the two doors look better but, think you will be better off with the one larger door for space and movement.

Welcome from se pa... pls let us know what you end up designing. Im in the early stages of figuring out what we want for a garage and have been pondering all issues related to the truck fitting. I want to be able to walk all the way around it even if the tailgate is down for loading etc. And high enough to allow for any vertical expansions. I really want to get it right.

Good luck with the construction and enjoy the tundra!

regardless of fit, I have always preferred a single garage door over double garage doors. the reason is that you can park a vehicle in the middle of the garage so that you can work on it. you cannot do that with double doors.

fitment wise, I would still get a single door. it allows more room for maneuvering in the garage when parking. for me, I always swing a little wide to clear the side mirror and the edge of the garage. when the mirror enters the garage, I can swing the truck closer to the side of the garage.

Also agree on the single door. My detached garage is about 30 feet deep and has a single door. I can park truck and SUV in it fairly easy

It's cheaper when designing a garage to do 2 single doors because you don't need to engineer it to support the weight of the roof over such a long span, but the single 16' door is definitely the most practical in my experience, for all the reasons already listed above.

I find my single door to be much more versatile. Also, my brother bought a house that had a 2 door garage and he absolutely hated it. He ended up ripping them out and installing a single door. Your mileage may vary.

If you’re just going to be parking stuff in there, go with 2 singles. If you’re going to be working on stuff in there, go with a double. IMO

Just went out and measured, a late model Tundra with tow mirrors (if you upgrade) is about 106" wide. If you get a measurement with standard mirrors, either way I'd add several inches each side for convenience going in/out.

Also consider height of the bottom of the garage door when opened which sometimes hangs a bit lower than the top of the garage opening.

I have both, a big single, and not 2 but 3 smaller singles. My house garage is a 24x32 3 car attached with 2 8x8 doors and 1 7x7 door. I park the Tundra in the middle which has an 8x8 door. Honestly, it fits fine, but even with the regular mirrors i have to watch each side as I back in, I have room, but sometimes if i'm not paying attention it's fricken close on one side to where I have to pull back out and start over. No big deal, but my Tacoma didn't have that problem because obviously it wasn't as wide.

My shop is also a 24x32 with a single 10x10 door. I back my truck in there a lot to clean it, or install a mod or whatever. I can tell you that for the sake of backing in and moving around the front of the truck when it's parked, the wider door is much better. Now, that being said, if I was looking for garage doors for my attached garage, I would stick with the 2 single doors, only because I looks nicer and makes me, and my wife, park straighter, which gives me some room when she parks. Otherwise, I'd be close on space....

Not sure that helps you, good luck.

I vote for a single door. I like to pull in the middle of the garage to work on things or load up my truck while its raining. Also one less garage door opener to worry about. If you are building that's another cost to factor in.

All great responses! Super helpful thanks all.

I'm now leaning toward a 18x8 ft single big door. So basically a bit larger than the standard 16x7 ft. Main reason for the single door is because I would want a catwalk on one side for a stair case to the attic (want to be as tall as possible to store all of life's stuff). I think going with two door might shift things over thus reducing the catwalk space.

This project might take me some time to start. I'll update once things get going. Thanks again!

There is no such thing as a garage that is too wide, too tall or too deep. And seriously, a hanger door garage with no aircraft in it? The horror!
