Change before 10k or at 10k like recommended?

Also Ive been hauling ass, accelerating fast and going 85-90 on the interstate for extended periods of time. Had the truck for a week and have 1k miles. Should I look for anything specific when getting first oil change? Ive read to check the quantity that is drained but thats it.

Pretty sure conciseness on these type threads regardless of make model when it’s asked should I follow owners manual / oil life monitor or change earlier the correct answer is what ever makes you feel more comfortable. Many wait to oil monitor says so, many change way sooner.

Had my oil changed @ 5,000, payed out of pocket but I feel better knowing the break in oil is out of my engine.

I dont know what Toyota’s standard OCI is for this engine but, being that its gasoline direct injected, there are legitimate reasons to not go more that 5000 miles. Soot and fuel dilution being the two main things.

The OP could probably get longer oci’s the way he drives but the GTDI motors are really hard on oil if they get short tripped and are not run hard.

There’s an oil change minder that takes into account how you drive so it reduces the oil change mileage interval from 10,000 miles to less if you’re more aggressive. You can check it by hitting the trip/odo button. It should show a wrench next to a mileage number.

But you could probably change it every 5k or 6 months. Just don’t forget to reset the oil maintenance minder.

I think the owners manual is 10,000 miles before first change, seems a long way out but I’m sure the engineers have their reasons.

Changed mine a 5k, then took it in the following week for Toyota's 5k inspection. 10k seems too long ideally during break in periods.

10,000 miles. Do the work yourself. Then always do the engine oil change work yourself. Smile all the way down the road.

I wish I had the want and desire to do it that frequently!
5k for me at a minimum. Primarily wanted to inquire about the first oil change

I see that, its showing at the 10k mile mark now

As a side bar, the million mile tundra guy said he changed his oil every 10k. So I would think there is some validity to the 10k interval.

    Too many, but not enough....
The manual says 10k miles under ideal conditions, its a nice marketing ploy to sell the car as low maint. If you read carefully it says it should be done sooner if you idle alot, sit in traffic alot, do alot of stop and go, etc. Essentially, most people fit into this category, so you should, in my opinion, do oil changes every 5k, it will also help keep your oil rings clean. Cheap insurance if you ask me.

Its worth noting that the million mile tundra guy that everyone loves to bring up is a very special and extreme case. The guy started his engine once a day and drove like 300 highway miles a day. Those are "ideal" conditions for 10k mile oil change.

Makes sense, as of now the plan is 5k

Would you recommend the first change to be sooner or not?

Again, I am overly cautious and a fan of overkill, so I personally did mine at 2k miles, then at 5k, then 10k and just recently 15k. I dont think it would hurt, it can only help.

The million mile tundra was not directed injected or turbocharged. He was also driving an insane amount so his engine was always hot, meaning it burned off any contaminants such as gasoline. That is perfect for long oil change intervals and a long life.

GTDI's that do not get heated up hot and are not driven at least 30 minutes at a time are very rough on oil. Look at the first gen Ecoboost. Ford tried to do 7500 mile OCI's I am pretty sure and the timing chains were stretching left and right. It took two updates to the API oil standard(SN+ and SP) specifically with the Ecoboost as the test platform to get to the oils we have now. And the trucks that got worked the hardest and were doing shorter OCI's got away with having no issues.

But since 90% of people who own half tons like to use them for commuting to the office and getting groceries, I would lean on the side of caution and suggest shorter OCI's. 5k is a nice number

Or you could send your oil to Blackstone for analysis.

Sharing my experience since I just changed my oil on Monday.

I had my 10k service and first oil change after owning my 22 Tundra since Dec. 15th. I opted not to change the oil at 5k and trusted the Toyota service manual recommendations.

I had asked the tech to look at the oil since this was the first oil change. They were curious too since this was the first 22 Tundra in for 10k service. He said it was super clean. They captured about 2 quarts of it during the early part of the drain and he said it didn't have "sheen" to it from any break in metal shavings in the engine.

10k service intervals for me. I drive about 550-600 miles a week so my experience is no doubt different from others.

Should be counting down from your current mileage (if you have 1234 miles, oil maintenance minder should be 8765).

Anyway, biggest concern with extended oil change intervals is running low on oil due to inherent burning of oil in all engines. Subaru reduced their oil change interval on some vehicles because of this. I’m not too worried about the oil breaking down after 10k miles of normal use. But I’d change the oil more often with regular towing.

    I don't have a pic but I can tell you the P/N: 90915-10010.

This is my service write up from my recent oil change.

You can't go wrong with sending an oil sample to Amsoil and using that as a basis for extended intervals. That's what I've always done with my vehicles and some can run for longer intervals than others...its very vehicle specific as mods can impact oil life. I drained the original oil asap and put Amsoil Signature Series in there. Plan is to send a sample at 5k and go from there. This helps document the engines health and your maintenance in case that ever gets questioned. I'm an amsoil dealer if anyone is interested

With this free service up to 25k or whatever, if you bring it in at 5k for an oil change do they still charge you?
