Have a 2006 tundra double cab with JBL completely original with no damage and it has been a good truck to accompany me to Home depot, and I too have bad reception on radio and yes the antenna is connected but am considering an upgrade to a new radio. I would like a plug and play, any recommendations ?
    thanks ,

    It's good
Get a Sony with apple play (car play?) if you use apple and a touchscreen. An adapter makes it work. Then you get hands free calling, back up cam if you want, google maps on your receiver, etc.

The only plug and play stuff fits non JBL stuff and still requires some harnesses from Toyota.
You may be able to make use of a 2012ish highlander JBL radio. Your best bet is aftermarket

I would listen to @empty_lord I probably cut something way back when I installed my adapter and the subsequent installs seemed plug and play.

You can pay crutchfield a small fee and they will make the harnesses for you if you go aftermarket so it could be plug and play. They should be able to set you up with the right stuff.

Don't the double cabs with JBL have to have a long harness to run to the back under the seat or something? Might be the only hickup if that's true. Someone with a double cab will have to answer.

    I believe so

the pin out for a 2012 highlander radio with jbl is the same. But they’re rare. And you’ll still be getting a pretty outdated radio. That had known issues of failure

But hey the interior lights would match it and it would dim too

I vote for aftermarket replacement. Nice units with many features out there. I'm prefer Kenwood stuff.

I didn't think anyone still listens to am/fm radio. Nothing but commercials anymore. I gave it up years ago.

First thing you need to do is look to see if you have a JBL amp mounted on the back wall of the cab behind the drivers side back seat.

Uts strange to me that they mounted the amp waaaaaay back there. On my access can there was a small amp behind the heater controls.

Along with the other ?'s, do you mind expounding on your meaning of plug and play ?

For instance, the 06 FSM shows the location of your JBL Amp as mounted where @weadjust shows above. This is somewhat important to know because if your wish is to also update to a more modern headunit, you'll be running a new cable to the rear Amp that then plugs into your existing speaker harness.

IMHO, until we know your meaning of plug and play and how much you plan on getting involved in installation, it's hard to even answer entertain recommendations.

I'll add a few things to give you an idea of what I did on my 04 DC limited when I did my install by purchasing everything from Crutchfield. Working with them was best decision I made. They provided 99% of what I needed, they were prompt in answering emails and were very support base. Usually able to talk to one support individual throught the whole process. The install was not that involved even tho I had the background.
    YMMV

Items below in a nut shell allowed me to have new Head Unit and Speakers, bypass my Amp on back wall, retained Steering Wheel Audio Controls, new to me BckUp Camera

There is no question. If they have the JBL system and the head unit is original, there's an amp. If double cab, it's (I believe) on the wall behind the driver's side rear passenger seat. If access cab, it's under a plastic cover in the cubby under the passenger side rear seat. Honestly don't know where it is in newer regular cab trucks.

@arbizu44 seriously. Go to Crutchfield. Not only will they give you the perfect-fit stuff but they'll give you ALL the adapters you need for a plug-and-play experience, AND they'll give you free unlimited phone support for installation. You're going to need at least the amp bypass adapter.

Thing is, Crutchfield doesn't charge outrageously more to get you this. Can you get it cheaper elsewhere? Yes. But time and hassle you spend equal money lost.

Your access cab was one of the earlier models, like '00-'03, I take it? We've seen that configuration of amp mounted under the head unit, behind HVAC controls on the earlier models. Dunno when it started or ended though.

My non-JBL 6 speaker system in the '06 had an amp also, and it was under the rear passenger seat too.

Better late than never,Thank you all for the input. I work out of town so I have been busy fixing home repairs when I get a chance to come home. That being said I have gotten the bug back to putting a radio and probably speakers in the tundra being they are 17 yrs. old. Thanks "BubbuW" for invoice #'s . Looking at an Alpine ilx-650 , But I must say that Kenwood looks sweet . I did mention plug n play was what I was thinking about, no new amp. I think the stock amp will be ok with new speakers, I just want to keep the sound in the cab and not in the street (but its always an option). Volume knob seems good though.

Just put a Sony unit in my sons ‘00 Access cab. Not JBL. It wireless Apple car play and it is awesome. I want one now for my ‘06 Tacoma. his amp was behind the heater controls.

Sorry no pics of everything buttoned up. They are on my sons phone. 9A591F10-CDF5-424E-8DEE-314E21DD686B.jpg43A4CCAA-8BFF-481B-8B6A-22BBE1210203.jpg 4C4EDDB5-6847-408E-A27D-234E8C600EDA.jpg4EFE7EB5-0C81-48E8-B3AD-11D1374A8C3B.jpg

I have used Crutchfield many time and can’t recommend them enough.

We did it all. New head unit, two amps, Qlogic box with 2 8” sub, 6 1/2 components I. The front, 6 1/2 coaxial in the rear doors and two amps.
