Do you have regular cab long bed, regular cab short bed, double cab, crewmax? The bed will limit your options. Look beyond Amazon. There's good and decent stuff on there, but it's not the only store. Search around on here and you'll get way better reviews on products. The only problem is you have to take the time to search and read.

I saw a 3 panel hard cover that was very clean and definitely water proof (covered the bed walls) and locked. I can't remember the brand because I gave up after I discovered the cost. Lol

8B8B4861-F28D-42AA-9CFF-15BF584F7046.jpg I just added this truxedo. It locks with the tailgate locked. It rolls all the way up so I can carry wood.waterproof so far. If installed correctly. And put some putty in the corner of the bed by the cab and that will insure waterproofing. Cost me about $300 through a local truck accessory store.

Go with a trifold, a roll up is pain in the butt when you want to get to the tools at the cab. Trifold hardcover can't be slashed and they are pretty much water proof. I use them for 7 years now hauling construction tools, concrete etc. I have my toolboxes with precioustools like drills, laser etc in the cab on the backseats. I got the new trifold for 900$ CDN including installation..

After the box cover look into switching to LED headlights. OEM ones suck, unless you got a platinum or 1794 where they are standard.

I've been rockin the bakflip MX4 on the Double Cab for ~6mos. and like it quite a bit.

    20210828_132441_HDR.jpg

    Pros:
-Allows for one to use all of the bed as it flips almost completely out of the way.

-Allows one to retain the factory tiedown rails with included relocating brackets.

-It is fairly secure with the tailgate locked (and could be made even more secure with a couple easy modifications.

-It is fairly weather resistant, but water does get in. Not enough to make me worry when carrying large tools like you describe.

    -Looks really nice

    -Slight MPG advantage

    Cons:

-Becomes very difficult to use with a layer of ice.

-Slightly more difficult to clean out the bed (I open it half way in the auto wash when it needs cleaning)

I transport the majority of my tools in the cab with the back seats folded up, reserving the bed for materials, debris, or large tools when I need them.

I thought it was adding a dog at first, then realized you meant the bed cover.

    Lolz.

I mean, pretty hard to argue against the dog as well.

He likes to use the tonneau as his own personal cave. Black dog doesnt like direct sun so much.

For transporting tools and such a shell is hard to beat.

I vote shell. I have a Diamondback - which is pretty secure, but when I was working out of truck nonstop for a while it was packed. Side entry on the shell would be worth the cost as well.
