    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
Europe has had these for nearly 9 years. Smart headlights that are basically Always on High Beam until they sense another auto and then lower the high beam on selective LEDs to avoid blinding any autos, leaving those LEDs not affecting drivers on High during this time to maximize viewing for the driver. Our lights are cxap by comparison....

    What took us so long???

Thanks for helping bringing them here Toyota.

No. These are a step above. Adaptive systems can shape the illuminated area to fit the situation.

"Unlike some automatic headlight switch systems from high to low beams, adaptive headlights use sensors, cameras, data-processing software, and headlamp hardware to detect oncoming and preceding vehicles and automatically adjust the beams."

Sounds similar to the "auto High Beam" feature on my 2020 sport. My headlights are always in "high Beam" mode. When oncoming traffic approaches the high beams switch to low beams. Same thing when in high beam mode and my vehicle approaches another vehicle from behind. My lights recognize the vehicle in front of me and switch the high beams to low beams.

My first car was 1992 Lincoln Continental that I got for 700 bucks in 2010. It had auto high beams and a full digital dash cluster, and self leveling air ride suspension. That car is now 30 years old......

Sounds like the auto high beams on my 18’. The system utilizes the camera in the windshield to detect oncoming traffic and switches back to low beams until the passing vehicle is gone.

I love my Tundra, but the auto high beams have never impressed me. I use them on rare occasion, but too often it high beams people or it sees a random light and goes to low beams when I don't want it to and I'm not expecting it. Also don't like how it goes to low when you drop below 20 mph or so. What idiot engineer thought that just because I've slowed below 20 mph I would no longer want high beams.

I also have a Subaru Legacy and the auto high beams on that are excellent, I use them all the time. Still has the same stupid standard of going to low beams under 20 mph though.

Yes - exactly. Saltyhero13 did an excellent job of describing them in a brief sentence. They don't just switch between High and Low. Imagine there might be 80 distinct LEDS, the system figures out in an instant which of the 80 LEDs to turn down to Low to prevent blinding oncoming traffic while leaving all the remaining LEDs on High, so the driver has maximum viewing ability at all times. I'm sure it will cost some yet our lives are kinda worth it!

My Tacoma has auto high beams already, I mean I’m pretty sure it does it automatically turns it off if there’s another car in front of me. It seems similar, these are halogens is that why it’s different? I do find this interesting though, will see a cost difference due to the extra tech?

I prefer less tech but it’s true that a lot of this tech will save many lives. Auto stop features especially. I myself have had some close calls where pre-collision detection wouldn’t have even let it become a close call.

Just something else to break. High beams have worked just fine for decades. How does making it more complicated and expensive make it better?

How do they adapt to traffic ahead that is traveling in the same direction? Do they dim so that they're not shining 'high beam' on the traffic that the vehicle is following?

The system uses the front camera to detect oncoming lights. It then switches the high beams back to low beams until the oncoming vehicle has passed. It’s really only useful on rural roads as it would constantly be switching back and forth on a normal highway or 2 way street.

Recently discovered this feature on my ‘21. I was always jealous of my wife’s tech features on her Lexus, this being one of them, when I drove my ford. Driving on back roads at night in NJ, this definitely comes in handy!

Only time I use my high beams is when people flash me thinking mine are on so I turn them on and then they rapid fire theirs to tell me to turn them off… but I don’t lol

No it’s not, but it’s also not funny when people intentionally leave theirs on knowing they are on but DGAF about others. I angle my lights down so they aren’t shooting up and at people. I mainly take other people safety into factor more then my own but I’m in the wrong?
