So after 12 tacomas I'm considering taking the bait with the extremely high resale and inflated market to move to a tundra before the 2022 redesign drops, I did find a clean 2018 Limited Crewmax with small lift, nice fuel wheels and 40k miles for $48k (i know i know close to what it would have cost new prior to this nonsense, but I'm getting $3k over what I paid for my 2020 taco). With that being said I do have a few questions being new to the tundra side of the house. I expect a hit in MPG but is it a huge hit? Anyone move from a Taco and have regrets? Any quirks I should look out for? Reason for the move is I know with us starting a family soon I want the extra space, solid reliability and want to stay in the Toyota family. Thanks in advance!

I switched from a 2016 6-speed Tacoma to a 2019 5.7 double cab, definitely no regrets. Engine is much better, more power especially low end torque. The extra room is great too, especially the bigger bed. Mileage for me went from 16 mpg on the taco to 13-14 on the tundra.

My 2015 Tacoma got 18-19mpg like clockwork. I could squeak out 21mpg if I stayed at 70mph on a road trip. My tundra was 14mpg.

MPG depends on build as far as the taco is concerned. I had 2004 taco before getting my tundra and when I put beefy tires and a lift on it, it actually wasn’t much different in MPG than my 2016 tundra, so I’m not distressed about it. Obviously your newer taco got better MPG than my old one but still, once you start deviating from stock it really isn’t vastly different. Maybe in the extreme long run but it sound like you get new trucks every so often.

these fellas have answered the MPG question fairly well so i'll take a different angle. I always found myself heavy on the pedals in my Taco to get passed vehicles on the highway... extra bad if i was towing. Not an issue with the Tundy, lots of jam when passing needs to happen and the available power meant i was no longer mashing the pedals to go a little faster.

Well he's right. You know what your mpg is on your Tacoma and there are many many threads here on the Tundras MPG, so...teach a man to fish etc

yeah, my bad, didn't mean to be passive on that. Was on a conference call*

I haven't had the Tundra long and still have my Tacoma. Currently sharing the Tundra with my Dad (who I got it from) he needs to go back to a diesel to haul tractors and such but low inventory is delaying that and I work from home so no rush for me to have it 100% of the time.

I added the Tundra for the same reasons, working on starting a family. With a kid(s) / dogs / (2) 12.5 FT kayaks / all the shit to carry, the Tacoma doesn't cut it... comfortably for me at least ** Tundra is everything I need, haven't noticed any issues but the Tundra only has 18k miles and most of those were from 5-6 trips to CO from TX where my parents have a vacation house.
Gas is a hit but keeping the Tacoma helps with that when I need to run around town and I've put some work into my Tacoma over the years and can't imagine selling it. It's my street toy I got myself when I got divorced. Tundra will just be a work horse for the family, small mod's here and there but nothing like my Tacoma, no need for it.

    I had a ‘96 Tacoma 6cyl 5 speed that consistently got 17.5. My ‘21 Tundra gets 13.5-14.5.

My 18 has a 7"lift, 35's and heavy bumpers. I'm lucky to get 12 on a good day. Truck is badass though so I don't care.

OP, head over to Mud. There’s a decent deal on a limited CM in GA. ‘17 I think. 100k which isn’t a ton but not brand new either. Looks in good shape. Hopefully someone doesn’t read this and poach it from you.

Just gona toss this out there, but if your reasoning to move to a Tundra is to eventually tow or handle heavy loads on a regular basis. Keep in mind that the Tundra is a bit on the lower end of payload compared to other half tons. I only say this because I didn't pay much attention to this initially as I was just wanting another Toyota when I switched from the Tacoma. An then after looking into travel trailers realized this fact.. Otherwise Tundras are great, I doubt you will regret it other then the size is inevitably bigger in small spaces..

Looks most like a spacer lift, with the factory black shocks.

Moved from a ‘18 Taco to my ‘21 Tundra. I loved the Taco but after having the Tundra I don’t think I could go back. The power and space is unmatched. We recently started a family and needed the space and with two dogs and a cart seat, there is still space in the back. I only got about 16-17mpg with my 6 speed Taco and I get about 15 with the tundra. Love not having to fill up every week with the huge gas tank as well

Moved from a 17 Tacoma to 21 tundra. Personally I preferred the Tacoma, I liked the size. Went from about 15mpg in Tacoma 3” lift 33’s. To 12mpg in tundra 3” lift 34’s. I was in the same boat as you with a growing family no choice but to upsize. The nice thing about the tundra is it just doesn’t care; It seems like it can take anything you can throw at it and just shrug it off. 3g Tacoma’s were quirky in my opinion, tundra is solid. I Don’t regret the decision at all but I do miss the Tacoma but honestly the tundra is a better truck.

went from a 19 taco to 21 tundra, mileage went from average of 18 mpg in the taco to 14.5 avg mpg in the tundra over four tanks, but it is getting better each fill up, fourth fill up was just over 15 mpg
the radio software was better in the taco, but other than that I think everything is better on the tundra
it drives so much better, no annoying shifting.

I don't understand all these terrible mileages you guys must be hammering it everywhere you go, I can understand if you level and throw in bigger heavier tires but with a stock crewmax I seem to average 16.5 to 17.5 on my 10 mile commute to work, granted I don't have to take the interstate and take the highway for 90 percent of my commute doing 55.

After my 4runner, I went with a 17 Tacoma. Had it 3 months and regretted the decision almost immediately. Too small and severely underpowered. Didn’t think I’d miss the v8 power from the 4Runner, but I did. I love my Tundra and I don’t think you’ll regret the decision at all. The hit in gas mileage is worth it to me.

It's a good call for the space for the family, but honestly I have 3 kids and we were able to cram the taco for a while. My oldest started getting long in the legs around 8-9 years old, so we moved to the Tundra. I'd say go for it just due to the high resale now if you're going to want to do it in the next few years anyway.

As far as mpg, I had a 15 taco that got about 16-17 mpg with lift and tires. I was actually beating that in the tundra before I put bigger tires on it, but I drive like an old man and ride mostly highway. Getting about 16-16.5 now, so not a huge difference. I will say, get the larger gas tank - it's nice not having to fill up as often.

I think a lot of guys are taking about average city highway mix. And many of them are lifted so that may Be their highway miles. When my truck was stock I could get between 16 and even over 18 out on the highway. Once I threw on a 2 inch lift keeping my stock tires, it went down to 16-17 tops and less if I’m hammering down. Now with 33‘s I’m lucky to squeak out 16 if I keep it below 75. In the city I’m about 10 mpg before I don’t think I could even get 12 mpg in the city. Lots of stop and go where I live. Funny, I did get over 13 mpg a month ago hauling a 68 big block Cougar over 320 miles. About 65 mph on the hwy in forth and sometimes fifth gear, with a few long grades. Only to receive 14.5 MPG on the way home unloaded no trailer. I was doing 80 to 85 mph with a headwind and a few jonts over 90... and may be over 100 a few times:anonymous: my governor is removed.. and an empty desert is real nice.
