Long considered “bloated indulges” by critics and record companies alike - there have been some great ones throughout the years.

Top of my head Physical Graffiti, White Album and The Wall in that order.

Live at The Fillmore East by ABB is a great sample of their live sound at the time - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness rounds out my top 5 I guess - actually like it a lot - but a different era - really any of the last 3 could be 3rd in my list.

What’s your favorite ? - there’s a couple out there I never really realized where “double” albums - and a lot of 90/2000s stuff that was a “single” album as CD/cassette but needed 2 vinyl albums (actually Mellon Collie is 4 - but 2 CD/cassette).

Is Metallica S&M considered a double album? If so, that’s probably it, for me.

Definitely The Wall for me. When albums weren’t just a collection of songs, but a story told throughout. The wall could be played as one long continuous song. And had a very British continuously long music video to go with it.

    I agree, The Wall.
Still listen to it from time to time, start to finish, while driving at work..

If you asked me this when I was 16 in 1977, I would have said Kiss - Alive. :eek2::cool:

In 1977 - just about anyone under @18 would have said KISS I believe. Probably as close to Beatlemania as rock will ever come again - boy bands be dammed.

One of those love/hate bands for me - love the stuff before they became a corporation into themselves - hate what they have publicly became.

I mean I think Gene and Paul are very intelligent people in some matters - intelligence and rock and roll are of course not at all related. Ace is what he is - musically gifted with the impulse control of a 6 year old.

Gene saw a bunch of old rock stars becoming reality stars and had to jump on the bandwagon. Both he and Paul saw an opportunity to establish an income stream from nostalgia and seized it - don’t blame them on that - I mean they are far from the first - but the fact they would place the band name on anything that offers them a lucrative licensing fee gets old. Kinda like Harley Davidson 1985-1993 - you have a highly recognizable brand that is a lifestyle for some people - and you pimped it out to anyone with a sack full of cash.

They have gotten more selective and protective - but still greedy at times. Again - there have been worse offenders. I mean when there are multiple bands using the same name (temptations, spinners, beach boys) floating around county fairs across the country - no one really noticed back in the 80s. Now with the internet and all - it’s a bigger deal.

Same deal as name a big name country star from the 60s - and you hit their grandson/great grandson trying to cash in on a name (or illegitimate great grandson in Hank Williams case) - I mean at a point just make your own name and leave the legacy behind.

Is Exit Stage Left a double album? It did fit on a single cassette but the CD version had to cut a song to fit on a CD. If so that's my favorite :,-)

Yeah, some music is really gooood music. And some is just mood music. Sounds fun, feels good, but lacks substance or real musical talent.

    I certainly never stated that.
Looking back it was some of the simplest stupid songs with 30-second, if that, guitar solos.
Yet when I was a young teenager growing up in a shit household, they were the coolest band ever.
Gave kids something they could 'belong' to..
We all change as we grow up, well, most of us do.

I never saw them live, and have no desire now to do so.
@Shamrock92 explained the band very well.

Thank God new wave saved me from being a Kiss freak.
I actually moved on to bands that made real music.
I expanded my music tastes over several genres, instead of only listening to Kiss albums, some of which I still have.

But Kiss sure fed many a rebellious teenager's desire to be 'different' and go against the 'system/parents'.
Just like Elvis, The Beatles, 70s classic Rock, Punk Rock, New Wave, Grunge, RATM, 'insert whatever band/genre you chose'..YMMV

    It is a double album.
I didn't become a Rush fan until Moving Pictures..

Seen them twice, 27 years apart, both great shows..

No different than all the 90s kids who think grunge was the best music ever made. Sorry - it wasn’t….but it was the music of our young adulthood and is something that will be kept alive for the next decade or so on “classic” rock radio.

Nirvana is a lot like KISS - catchy songs. Yes - lyrically Nirvana is deeper - I mean what isn’t deeper lyrically than KISS. But who cares - sometimes simple is best. Decades of blues and country have lyrics that simply talk of bad luck, unfaithful women and losing everything - yet it works beautifully.

And if I’m comparing KISS to a “90s” band - I’m gonna go with Green Day as much best comparison.

Everyone “hated” them early on - yet somehow they sold like 10 million records. It was bubblegum punk - just like KI$$ was bubblegum metal. I don’t look to musicians for anything more than music. Green Day at least showed they were a little more than wannabe punk though. KISS continues to show you can just put in a little stage show with a lot of smoke and lighting playing loud and sell tickets.

Grunge sucks too. If we're talking 90s music, I'd rather listen to stoner rock. If we're talking edgy music with limited musical talent, I'd rather listen to real punk.

ETA: Green Day sucks too. They're neither grunge nor punk.

I only saw them once, in Tampa or maybe Orlando, maybe late 80's or early 90's, it rocked!
