So after weeks of conversation with Toyota about the excessive amount of water the tonneau cover allows in the bed, i was told by a senior member that they are pleased with the design and it is functioning as intended. Unless there is an outcry from owners, i am the proud owner of a $1300 cover that only prevents my belongings from flying out. Anyone else having issues and have you reported with brand engagement?

    Is it advertised as waterproof?

When i purchased in May there wasn't any mention of waterproof or not. Just protection of valuables.Even the dealer told me it was the one i wanted to protect my gear and valuables from the elements.Fast forward a few months later and the language on the build website has completely changed. Here's the original below.I even mentioned it/uploaded it to my case file and they said volume speaks

I had my Toyota hard trifold put on yesterday by the dealer. I went through the automatic car wash tonight and looked when I got out, it was completely dry in there.

I suppose a return/refund is out of the question?

It doesn't help you in this instance, but in reading your post and quite a few others on here I will never buy a tonneau cover from the dealer. They are selling a re-branded cover that makes it impossible for you to go to the actual manufacturer for a resolution. I've had my share of headaches with tonneau covers on my 22 (I'm on #4 now) but I can't praise Realtruck and Bak enough for helping me through the problems.

Well, just chalk this one up as another issue Toyota is saying F.U. to the customer. I am beyond dumbfounded at the "Toyota experience" I have had so far with my first and last one from the brand.

Same. I have the oem trifold, and through car washes/rain it stays completely dry.

I'd do a test to see exactly where it's leaking from (open tailgate, look inside and hose water slowly over tonneau).

I’d completely remove it and reinstall it. It’s likely not sitting right on the bed rails. Check that the support brackets are sitting level from side to side. Something isn’t right.

Agree. I have the BAKFlip model (same as OEM) and it didn’t install perfectly square, etc. After some minor adjustments it fits better and doesn’t take on any water from rainfall or the car wash.

None of the trifold covers will guarantee waterproof.

I can go through a driving rain or a car wash...totally dry inside. But, 15 mins of trail riding in the desert and I'm blowing out the bed with my leaf blower when I get home. haha.

Just sharing because I thought it was a funny comparison. Fine desert sand/dust gets kicked up from all different directions so it finds a way in no matter what you do.

I never expect a tonneau cover to be waterproof. Resistant at best. However, knowing how many people haven't had major issues with water intrusion, I would check the install fitment.

Most of your covers will be surprisingly "water proof" if you apply seals correctly, it's typically bed gaps and spacing that allow water to enter the bed from below when driving at moderate rates of speed.

I was told that Bak was having trouble with a new adhesive they went to. I understand no cover is said to be waterproof, but the two F1 covers I tried leaked terribly across the bed through all the seams between panels; that is definitely a no go! If it is leaking through the seams, that's a manufacturer defect according to the Bak rep that helped me.

Mine also let's very little if any water in either raining or car wash. Was also surprised as I didn't expect that but like kroppduster said dust is everywhere and needs blown out.

I got for automatic carwash frequently and even with jets spring water from various corners, very very little water seep in.

The other day I got caught in.poring rains, it was so bad that we could barely see the road and we were in it for good 30-35 mins. After reaching home, i checked and there was barely any water at all.

This might not be the best thread for this question, but does anyone know which of the torx screws in the picture below comes with the factory tonneau cover? I am removing the cover to get my canopy installed tomorrow and would prefer to keep the right hardware together.AB7AFABE-E124-426B-AB09-AEB18B96828D.jpg

I went from a 2010 Tacoma which had an Toyota branded Tri-fold Tonneau Cover. Now I have a 2024 Tundra with a Toyota Tri Fold Tonneau Cover. The Tacoma one worked great and didn't allow dust or water into the box; or very minimal amounts. The Tundra Tonneau cover is terrible when i drive on a gravel road for 5 minutes the result is a 1/4 inch thick layer of dust in the truck box and everything has a thick layer of dust on it. I can guarantee The Tacoma did not have this problem one bit. When i took a brief look like why it seems like the tailgate is the issue and that has large gaps on either side. It almost seems like i get more dust in the box with the cover than had i just left the cover off. anyone else experience this? any resolutions? should i complain to Toyota? To me this Tonneau cover is useless but i can't say if its cause of the tailgate or the cover. if someone had a full box cap they may know if this is an issue for them.

Tonneau covers are all about installation

I’ve had an installed 9 I think lol

i always install myself and take my time , make sure things are super aligned and then water test with a hose and spot seal corners etc with silicone and use tailgate gaskets etc

that said , there is no such thing as waterproof under any conditions , but mine is damn tight

my advice op, if you are handy type dude , take it off and re install , use a flashlight as well with someone from the outside while your in the bed and also water test with hose

if your not a handy or wrenching type guy, do you have a friend that is? Beers go a long way asking for help

the dealer or port installed are just throw on, not tlc that these need to perform well imo

1000%. I have done a few and 1 re-install from a factory/port install. Makes a world of difference to make sure the seals are set and everything is aligned. Plan on doing the same if I ever get another with a Port Installed cover.

My dealer-installed tri fold leaks very slightly at the tailgate corners where the rubber flap is obviously just a tad short of covering 100%. Are they adjustable or just too short?

I’m sure I could fix it somehow, but would never put anything back there that couldn’t take a few drops of water.

In another thread on this forum, I reported that I was getting significant water infiltration on the passenger side of the bed. I have the BakFlip MX4 which I believe is the same as the Toyota cover.
Today I finally did some testing. It is important to note that I always back the truck in my driveway and there is a significant tilt from front to back and driver to passenger.
I flooded the cover with the tailgate down and did not see any leakage.
I put the tailgate up and flooded the top of the tailgate. I did see water leakage.
I’m not sure but I believe it is coming in from the back of the cover where it seals against the top of the tailgate.
Some could have been coming in from the significant gap between the tailgate and the bed wall.
Unfortunately, the cover doesn’t cover that.
To mitigate that I glued in some hard foam blocks with E6000 (similar to Goop).
What I need to really test my theory is to park the truck facing the garage before the next rain storm.

EDIT: I finally tried parking the truck in opposite direction just before a heavy rain. Just saw a few drops at the corners on the tailgate. So not sure if those foam blocks are helping. Bottom line, almost all tonneau covers leak a little so just learn to live with it.
