I am working on compiling some information for some upcoming rear end work on my truck. My outer axle seals are leaking and so is the pinion seal.

    • has anyone found a write up on the factory LSD rebuild? Mine has about 280,000 miles on it and I’d like to replace the clutches and re gear if possible.
    • Also, I found a rear axle from a 2000 RC, I can get the axle for CHEAP. The gear ratios match, but it doesn’t have ABS. Does anyone know of a reason that I couldn’t use that axle? (Other than losing abs)

I think I’m fine with losing abs but I’m a little uneasy about the swap. I know it would be hard to find another axle if something went wrong. Has anyone done something similar?

I have no input, and no way to really add anything here. What do they want for the rear axle? Rusty crusty?

If something goes wrong, and it's clean, I might buy it for crackie from you.

    Good luck!

(I realize the axle isn't a done deal yet, and you're just exploring that option.)

It’s currently on my dad’s parts truck. It’s in pretty good condition and has less miles than my current axle. I could pretty much get it for free. Good seals and everything, only drawback is no ABS.

shoot me a dm, I might have some parts for crackie.

Just tossing this out there in case you don't already know ...

You're 4WD so whatever gears you're dropping out back need to match what's up front, make sure you know what gearing you've got and are installing!
Likewise, the rear axles on DC/Sequoia are not the same width as their smaller-cab AC/RC Tundra bretheren.
Finally, doesn't apply here, but misc provisions on Seuqoia supposedly aren't same as DC either, not to mention Sequoia having rear discs and Torsen diff ...

Even if you know the important parts of this which apply, I'm leaving these three points just in case someone who doesn't may stumble over it later.

I wouldn’t rebuild the factory lsd. Just pickup a better aftermarket option.

I appreciate the info! I triple checked gear ratios (3.909). I wonder if the sequoia torsen diff would fit in our tundras.

What would you recommend as a better alternative? I don't want a locker, I'm pretty set on the LSD.

A selectable locker is the best option. Why don’t you want a locker?

I like the on-road drivability of an LSD, and it also has no wiring or air to deal with. call it personal preference.

Look at an Eaton true trac then. No clutches to worry about.

Is that for all Sequoias? (the torsen diff)?

I'm definitely not the expert on that, but I'm pretty sure it's the case. I only found out when someone made the claim Sequoia has all-time RWD capability without risk of binding. It makes sense an SUV would have it vs. a truck.

I concur with this reasoning. A locker is better offroad but horrible on the street. A limited slip, on the other hand, is great on the street and ok offroad. I spend way more time on road but still notice an appreciable difference offroad with the Auburn in my 2nd Gen. They didn’t offer a helical gear torsen type when I installed mine but I probably would have gone that route instead. No clutches to wear out. That said, my Auburn has over 100k on the clock and still works great. No regrets installing it.

I believe they are talking about the transfer case having a torsen differential in it, not the rear axle (though the rear axle may have one as well; I was under the impression it’s a clutch type, though). The torsen in the transfer case allows you to use 4wd in ALL conditions including dry pavement, making tight turns in parking lots for example, without binding. It can also be locked for traditional 4wd 50/50 power transfer. It was offered in the gen 2 and Gen 1 sequoia, but not the gen 3.

It’s a wonderful system. I love having it in my sequoia so much I’m looking for a transfer case to swap in to my tundra.

A 20 ton press, yes. Once you get it figured out it's not bad at all. It's just the previous 3 attempts that sucked. This video is a 100% must watch if you diy.

As for swapping the whole axle, I'm pretty sure rclb and a DC aren't interchangeable, and combining abs w/non abs would only be OK if you pulled the fuse.

I would be swapping an RCLB axled into an AC, so I think it will work out.

It can, I thought you were DC for some reason.
