An Amazon seller Accu Auto parts is selling Motive gears super cheap. I actually want 4.88s but they don’t have both front and rears available at that low price so 5.29s it was. Both 5.29 fronts and rears can be had for about $175. Of course the bearing/install kits must still be purchased for another $900 or so, but still a big savings. I ordered some figuring I can always return them at that price. I don’t see them mentioned much on this forum however. They seem to be pretty well a respected manufacturer of gears on other platforms. Does anyone have these installed, or have any personal experience? Im wondering if they will last behind the extra power I have, and frequently use for towing. Any feedback is appreciated. I’d like to know the facts before actually having these installed.

Well crap. Now u got me looking at gears again… interested to see how this turns out.

Edit - looks like you could still get 4.88 front and rear for $300. CHEAP.

I couldn’t even find the Motive 9” reverse fronts listed on there in 4.88s. Got a link?

Too bad there are limited reviews. Kinda spendy for an install and see how they hold up.

It’s weird cause if I you check that companies website they aren’t even listed as on sale on there. Like they’re doing a dump em for cheap sale through Amazon. https://accuautoparts.com/axle.php

One thing I won’t cheap out on is gears. Motive gears are fine gears but no way I’d buy from Amazon and some no name seller. Call dirtydeeds and he’ll hook you up.

Do you have experience with Motive gears? Nothing against dirty deeds or any other reputable vendors, I’m just not sure I’m interested in doing the gears if I’m gonna pay full price for them just because I frankly don’t need them. At this price I figure it’s worth trying. My installer is someone I trust and has done a great job for me before on LSD and locker installs so I planned to have him look them over beforehand.

Personally no but friends that haven’t had issues. Haven’t seen any complaints on other forums from folks running them either. I run Sierra in the tundra and Yukon in my k5. Paid $2100 for front and rear gears and master install kits for 5.29’s from Keith.

Is the apprehension from fear of getting counterfeit parts? I see they are sold on Amazon by National Drivetrain of Grand Prairie, Texas. I was thinking I could call Motive and make sure they are authorized retailers of their gears.

Definitely run it by him and get his view point before committing to the gears.

I wouldn’t buy anything from an unknown seller on Amazon. You can get Chinese gears for $12 and rebox them. If it’s too good to be true……

never install a Chinese crank in your engine.

A lot of people don’t think they need gears until they get run them..

if you have bigger than stock tires, you need gears due to the way the ecu calculates load.

My truck weighs 6,560 lbs on a CAT scale. It currently does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and an 1/8 mile in 8.30 at 84mph. This is stock gears and 34.5” tires. With 5.29s how much faster do you think it would be? If the answer is not much, I think I’ll skip dropping the coin on them at the moment. If we are talking a good .3-.5 seconds quicker then maybe I’d be interested.

Nitro was dumping 4.88 gears for the 10.5” last year for sub-$200. Revo front 9” can routinely be had for sub 300. Perhaps $50 is too good to be true, but sub 200 doesn’t necessarily mean too good.

They were US Gear now that I look closer. $211. IIRC, US Gear is Randy’s budget line; they are supposedly Yukon’s that didn’t fully meet spec but aren’t too far off.

    https://www.amazon.com/USA-Standard-Gear-T9R-488R-Differential/dp/B07MSVHFVW

I’m in the same boat. Don’t need them, but I have a trusted installer that will be installing my Grip Pro torsen rear here shortly. Deciding if I really want to step it up and do gears. He charges fair price, but prolly still cheaper than the group buys on here.

Same here. My guy’s work is excellent and his prices are fair enough that the install cost makes it still a somewhat feasible consideration. I should have just done the gears right away when I did the Powertrax diff since I’ll be paying to do it again basically. I recommend you do the gears right away if you’re doing the LSD if you are at all interested in installing the gears at some point.

With a 0-60 time like that, i think i’d put my money towards a pair of rear slicks and a full rollcage!

Yup! I’ve never got to talk to anyhow who was already supercharged when they got gears. Everyone seems to have the gears already beforehand so it’s hard to get a good read on the difference with the extra power. I’m open to it if it’s worth it.

I think with the lower 5.29’s, that your truck would pull harder from the 1/8 mile all the way to the 1/4 finish. What was your stock tire size and gear ratio?

I’ve had an Auburn installed for the last 140k miles or so. It’s lived a hard life. Still works great but chews through friction modifier pretty fast due to the load I’m guessing. Swapping to the Powertrax unit that’s been sitting on the workbench a while. I’m guessing this time around I’ll need new bearings and such; amazingly, we were able to reuse the OE bearing from the OE carrier last time, so my install cost was more than reasonable. But maybe if I’m doing bearings this time, I might as well gear down and do the whole jalopy. Like you said - if I’m gonna do it, I better do it now.

I still run stock tire size but would consider switching to 33’s - MAYBE 34’s - so 4.88’s could fit the bill for me. I still have about a years worth of tread on these tires. I also have the rear Nitro 4.88’s sitting on the workbench that they were blowing out last year for cheap. I was hoping they would start dumping the front 4.88’s as well, but no dice. My truck is still quite a bit heavier than yours on the daily (and much, much slower…), which is the only reason I’d consider the gearing. The Whipple makes me forget how heavy it really is sometimes… And it hasn’t once whimpered while pulling heavy. Which is why installed it in the first place. That, and smiles per gallon.

It’s a torque multiplier. I went from towing s4 at 70mph and 7mpg to s5 at 70mph and 9mpg. You’d be much quicker out of the hole with better gearing and my sports cars always dropped a tenth or two on the 60ft but that was also traction limited. Not familiar enough with this truck to know how it would affecting shifting and what gear you may or may not be in at the lights.

I thought gears made as much of a difference as going to the stock supercharger. I don't know if it actually made the truck quicker necessarily, but it certainly felt like it launched harder and definitely had the ability to break the tires loose a lot easier after the gears.

I'm of the same opinion, gears at full price I can't really justify but I did jump when there was a deal. After having them, I wouldn't change my stance on that (and with consideration I had the blower already).

Stock tire size is around 32” with 4.30 gears. In theory I get that thought process for sure, I’ve just yet to see it demonstrated in practice with some data or time slips.

If I could get a full set of Nitro or sierra gears with the master install kits for around $1400 I’d probably do it. I think I remember seeing that crazy price once before and it didn’t last long. The value of the dollar has only decreased since then though, so that’s unlikely to see again. I’d sooner put more money into some other things for the truck just because I’ve been nothing but pleased with my current power, towing, gear holding etc. I’m definitely appreciating the input on this discussion. If they were cheaper and I could install them in my driveway with no special tools or skills I’d have them already.

As far as these Motive gears, I think I’ll try and call national drivetrain and confirm my order is through them on Amazon and try and get a better read on if the gears are genuine.

It would appear they are indeed legitimate vendors based on the Motive website at least.

Well damn this took off. I looked at as soon as you posted over on the SC thread. I did do so googling and it's seems for the most part people like them. They have been around for a long time. But like DD say, careful with the re-boxed stuff. Nowadays I am always second guessing cheap stuff. When I was looking for my DW FP and injectors, there where a few places that were to good to be true, Autopilicty for one. There reviews and BBB was BAD. Wasn't taking the chance. Still found them cheaper than what DW list them but from a reputable DW authorized seller.
