Has anyone ever heard of the fan blade just exploding for no apparent reason? Mine has done it twice within six months.

Never really heard about this problem before on this forum, but plastic does deteriorate over time. Was the second fan it happened to new or used?

    Pretty things
Does/did the fan seem to make a lot for noise than before?

You may have a bad fan clutch attempting to run at warp speed all the time.

Old BMWs are known to do this when the fan clutch fails, and can unleash all kinds of carnage.

Also, use OE parts if at all possible.

    Some.
I'd say check your fan clutch, check your radiator mounts, check your shroud mounts, and check engine mounts.
Either the fans were old and spun fast enough to cause the blades to separate, or something is causing the blades to hit the shroud.
If the fan clutch is seized, it will cause stress on the blades when it is running full bore and when the engine shuts off.

I've had my drive belt strip and wrap around my fan a couple of times, but never exploded.. water pump has twice.
