Hello, as the subject suggests I am looking for opinions on running 3rd gen wheels on my 2011 TRD 4x4. I have read many threads and I know alot of people are running them but I am hung up on the .5mm difference in hub size specifically per the main thread. Are you guys getting any vibrations or have had any issues to share? It seems the best option is a thin layer of aluminum tape to take out the space but if I end up towing or putting alot of weight in the back I don't want to risk issues.

Do you have a link? I couldn't find them and figured the .5mm was too thin.

Thank you, are those the right size? Don't I need 110 to 110.5? Sorry noob on wheel fitment. Would I just get a 110 and assume it would center the slightly larger (.5) stated center bore?

I took it to an audio shop of all places and they measured out the wheel bore and they knew the center bore on my hub. Center bore is 110, so all you need is the wheel bore.. most Toyota wheels are hubcentric so, measure the wheel bore first before buying...

Hmm, I installed 2020 wheels on my 2008 and never even thought about this...

Most Toyota wheels are built for hub centric mountings as to avoid the added stress on the wheel studs... ir so I learned from the Lexus forums...

So everyone can see what I am talking about. Center bore is slightly different by .5mm on the 2nd gen vs 3rd gen. I don't think it's enough to matter but looking to hear if anyone dealt with this or just go for it. The set I am looking at are off a 20 or 21 tundra.

A half a mm looks to me more like adding a little tolerance rather than a redesign.

Good point, I do think I've seen 3rd gens running 2nd gen wheels too which wouldn't work if they were extremely tight tolerances. Still trying to decide if I should pull the trigger or not. I'm just worried if there is space there and I filled the bed full of rocks or dirt or something it could overload the studs. Under $1k for brand new 1794 edition wheels with brand new michelin ltx is such a tempting deal and I could sell my 11' trds to recoup half of that.

I would go ahead and buy them. I ended up with new limited wheels for $300 and new LTX tires for $200 locally and I haven't run into any issues in the 6 months I've been running them. If you're really worried, you can buy sheet material that's 0.25mm thick to use to shim the gap. This is about 0.01", so said material will likely be classified as foil.

Did you end up buying them? Giving my son my 2015 wheels for his 08. Any issues? Did you foil them?

They're literally the exact same drivetrain and chassis, I wouldn't think twice about "2nd vs 3rd generation", it's semantics, they're the exact same truck except for some cosmetic tweaks to the body.

Yeah, that’s what I’m telling him. He’s worried cuz the bore is like .5 mm difference. And he’s my kid so doing due diligence. Plus he tows a decent size boat a lot.

Check the build link in my signature.
I put 2015 TRD OR wheels on my 2008 TRD OR in 2015, and then put another 150k miles on the truck after that. No issues. Lots of hauling dirt/ gravel/ bark/ mulch and plenty of NW forest services roads. Not a lot of towing (maybe 3-4 times a year). Would’ve never even thought there was any difference - they slipped right on just like the ones I took off.

I too have ‘17 wheels on my ‘08, no issue.

I really wonder if all the hub pilot sizes on “2nd gen” and “3rd gen” are 110.0 mm, and the wheel bore sizes are all 110.5mm.

Wheel pilots aren’t a press fit, though 0.5mm (0.020”) seems a little bit much for clearance.

I’ll have to measure the bore of both sets of my wheels when I swap for winter.

Appreciate it guys. Wouldn’t give it a second thought if it wasn’t my kid, so wanted some first hand accounts. :hattip:
