I bought a 2005 SR5 DC two years ago in nearly perfect condition - except for the paint. I didn't care about that since I don't care how it looks, just how it runs, and this badass truck checks all my boxes.

Unfortunately, even though it's my truck, because I'm married another box has recently been added to the list.

We live in a fairly well-kept neighborhood where all the neighbors have something to say about all the other neighbors. No longer in the trailer park where wifey and I happily lived in our first home. I (she) decided rusty patina doesn't suit our current social standing... and yes, if you're wondering, she picks out my clothes before we go out too.

Fortunately, this time though, I am picking the color, and the paint...

Since I don't like washing cars or wasting time on esthetics and if I were to get a regular paint job I know I'd feel compelled to do the wash and wax thing, I've decided to slap bedliner on the whole truck for about the same cost as a regular paint job - $3k. Best thing about bedliner is when it gets dirty you leave it outside and let the rain wash it off - that's my kinda paint!

Bedliner material was whatever the shop uses since I don't have anywhere to DIY prep or paint (for DIY I'd have gone with Raptor Liner - seems fairly easy to use). In this shop, the guys are using Marvel-M91, which comes in a few standard colors - black, gray, and sand are a few, but I chose the gray. Black in Texas = hard pass, and I don't like the sand color. They can also tint the stuff, but it costs an extra $1 to $2k.

Here's a sample pic of the color (just the gray):
    IMG_0134.jpg

I figured that although the paint isn't specifically a 1g thing, but since we have notoriously bad paint, and it's going on a 1g, I'd share the experience with my fellow best gen members. Hopefully it will be helpful in case anyone else here decides to go the same route.

Before pics - can't help but notice the typical roof and hood rust:

    After pre-paint prep:

After spray pics coming once I get the truck back (hopefully 8-29) and if necessary some lessons learned.

We have a member here who did the same thing in the sand color. Came out pretty good too. Good luck.

Oh man Jack, I've been scouring the internet looking for other pics/posts of 1g Tundras getting full bedliner. I found this pic but couldn't find the post.Screenshot_20250818_154633_DuckDuckGo.jpg

Love the way he did the bumper.

I saw a guy's third-gen Tundra with a sort of cement color bedliner and I think it's probably the best combo of decent-looking and likely to keep looking decent. Homie went right over the decals and badges and everything--respeck! As to colors, black is right out, any dark color really; they always end up looking chalky and, at best, like a deer lease truck.

Yep, that’s member @Cummins3500 ’s truck. I haven’t seen him post in awhile but he’s got a few posts on here talking about it.

I am interested in seeing your results...

The Line-x liner in my 06 Colorado bed was black and never changed color or go chalky at all. It looked great after 20 years of never being garaged. The only thing that weathered at all was the rubber Line-x logo.

The guy that sprayed it asked how much texture I wanted, as he could adjust that with spray technique.

The material is heavier than paint, but it literally is bomb-resistant.

I like the two tone there. The problem with a lot of large vehicles with bed liner is often the trim and everything is all painted at once which is just a giant slab of monochromatic flat bed liner.

No, I'm just paint. My next neighbor did a full spray on bedliner job on his second gen though.

Here’s my Tacoma getting a quick rinse. Nice thing about being bed lined, no need to wipe down afterwards, only the windows.

I bedlined my truck myself back in November 2023. I used Monstaliner and rolled it on over a long weekend. The color is Light Quartz Gray (similar to a cement color, or primer). Overall I'm super happy with how it turned out, a few mistakes here and there but overall looks good for my first time with a project of this scope. Between the cost of the paint and the prep tools/equipment, I spent roughly $800. I put in well over 50 labor hours total but nearly 2 years later, it still looks great and is super easy to clean up and has held up very well.

Let me know if you have any questions about the process!

He had it parked outside today so I snapped some for you. This was a DYI job he did in his driveway, previously it was mismatched red and black, a black truck with a red bed replaced after an accident.

Probably for being able to climb into the truck bed with the tailgate up.

This came out looking pretty good. Especially since it's rolled.

The decals were put on with a heat gun and sponge to press them into the textured surface. Overall they are holding up but I'm starting to get some peeling on the Toyota tailgate decal. I might have to redo a couple letters in the next year or so.
widdle wadder for a big twuck

Thank you! There's a few spots where the roller lines are visible, and if I could do it over again I'd be more meticulous about my final coat to eliminate the lines. But unless you're looking for them, it's hard to tell.

Well from the pics you posted we can't see any. I rolled a textured durabek liner on my truck bed and I know what you're talking about with the final coat. How many coats did you roll? This isn't my best pic but one I took right after it was done. The bed liner took a full day. IMG_8602.jpg

Thanks, figured if Im painting it, I might as well make it pop.
Yaaaa I’ve seen those trucks where the spray over every thing, usually looks pretty thin too. Most of the job is definitely in the prep work
Huh what was the process like rolling it on, how does it look up close texture wise?

I sprayed Raptorliner and that was pretty easy, interested in rollers though as I don’t have the space to spray now

The roll on method is similar to spraying it. Like you said, It's really all in the prep. Roughly sand everything down, clean with solvide or xylene, tape everything off and roll it on with their supplied roller for textured paint. Pull the tape right after the last coat is applied while it's still wet.

I followed the directions pretty closely when I rolled my truck bed. I left my cap on and rolled 2 coats. Up close you can see some areas have a bit more texture than others. But overall it's hard to see it unless you're looking for it. The liner I used for my bed also cures fairly quickly. Be ready to commit to using what ever you open that day. Resealing the can isn't recommended. So for example, if you need multiple gallons to paint everything, use each entire gallon as fast as possible.

It also comes in a smooth surface finish. I have no first hand experience with the smooth but on their website they have a lot of pics and reviews people have posted. If I end up painting the first gen sequoia, I'll likely use the smooth as I don't want the whole textured truck look. I'll also likely do similar to what you did and go 2 tone with it. Olive drab green main body with black accents. As noted above, if I ever do this I'll likely plan on painting the truck in sections over a couple of days. Using maybe a few gallons per day and not storing anything overnight.
