I recently noticed a newish noise when I start my 07 5.7 tundra . After it warms up it isn't as loud . Does this have something to do with my timing chain or tensioner ? Below is a video clip of the noise . Any feedback would be much appreciated thank you !

I hear it. Could be chain tensioner. It’s a louder clack than the noisy valves, so don’t think its that. Automotive stethoscope is handy in these situations to pinpoint the source of the noise

There have been some that have posted similar questions, and others have speculated that it could be piston slap...

I agree with sloppy chain tensioner. Is it isolated to one side on the front of the engine? What weight oil are you running?

Seems like it is just the driver side . Whole time I've been using 5w-20 . Would it be wise to go to 5w-30 ?

That mileage, I’d try 10-30 or 10-40. If it’s present on cold start going from 5-20 to 5-30 theoretically wouldn’t change anything as they’re both 5w when the problem presents itself.

It is the driver side cam chain tensioner.I put a youtube on this forum showing what it sounds like. Not an easy job but can be done.I went to 5-30 and it is not as noisy now.

I won’t speak for @treeandsome but I haven’t don’t the repair and based on the wording of his post I don’t think he has either. Going to heavier oil to cushion the slap is typically the alternative to diving into the repair. There are people on here who have tackled the replacement and there are some videos on YouTube as well if you search there.

I would do everything I could to avoid sourcing critical engine parts from eBay.

I will do mine one of these days,it's not a big deal for me (x-mechanic).It's the cost of the Toyota parts and I had some people tell me that they have in excess of 300k with this happening for some time already.I know it is an interference engine and maybe I am gambling here.I'll get to it.You make sure that fleebay sold you oem parts.I personally would not trust it and there is to much at stake.
