Is it just me or does te Tundra idle rather high when started in park? Drivetrain does not clunk when put in gear like an older car might but idle seems a bit high.

Idle higher on cold start than when the engine is fully warmed up? Yep. Sho duz.

I am not exactly sure what triggers the "cold start" operation, but it may not be just temperature.
It may be time based or idk.

    Anyone know for sure?

Unless it’s 200F out, your truck always cold starts when it’s been sitting for awhile.

Sounds like a jet preparing for takeoff! My 2002 Tacoma did the same thing. No Ford, Dodge, Honda, or Nissan that I’ve owned in between has done it quite so dramatically.

Idle speed is relative to coolant temperature. Higher idle = faster warmup = faster heating of cats to lower emissions.

Edit: There is also a default idle/throttle position that will be adjusted accordingly based on coolant temp shortly after startup.

Doesn’t matter. Unless the engine is at or close to operating temp, it’s going to high idle at startup. If it’s 90* outside and the trucks been sitting over night, it’s still going to high idle at startup since 90* is still a “cold” motor.

I am used to being able to kick it down or have it go down by itself. Seems it stays high too long.

In addition to what the others have said, the roar you hear is the air injection pumps, I believe.

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
All Toyota trucks do that since at least the 80s...part of the 'noise' is the mechanical fan...
