Hi all !Has anyone here ever cleaned their engine bay on their 3rd gen hybrid? I am skeptical about pressure washing and thought it would better to use a wash rag or something that didn't flood any of the components on the inverter and or any ev parts and was considering something to leave a semi gloss shine to plastic parts and upper part of hood and not water log the dampening mat on under side of hood. Thanks for your experience or any ideas on this! smileytn1

I think @shifty` mentioned something about one of the options of simple green being bad for aluminum maybe?

30 plus years of using never seen any issues. Imo
Plus these days the engine is all covered up.

At work I use the garden hose and a caustic degreaser that does discolor the aluminum engines on fork trucks (removes paint too). Everyone else insist on the 3000 psi pressure washer.....mine starts there's do not.

Yes. To the point it was banned federally military use on aircraft, maybe other stuff, I forget, my brain is old. Some major aviation/avionics entity, possibly military, also banned its use.

If you use it on anodized alloy and let it dwell too long or don’t rinse off completely, it will permanently degrade and leave it damaged, at minimum hazed in a way you can’t get out, almost like water spots, and at worst, strip anodizing and your alloy will start pitting.

A lot of people will tell you, “Ah, I use it all the time”, but it clearly states on the bottle you shouldn’t use it on specific metals. It doesn’t get banned for use for no reason. I’ve restored and flipped hundreds of bikes over the years where it was clear someone used Simple Green or Purple Power on the alloy cranks and they were permanently damaged, no amount of Mothers would get it right again.

They do make Simple Green HD (the purple stuff) for alloys and the like. Simple Green isn’t the only cleaner with this issue, Purple Power has notoriety for doing the same.

But hey, don’t take my word for it. If you don’t want to believe the manufacturer’s warning, or you don’t want to believe me, there’s oodles of evidence out there… but hey, I’m probably still wrong, and someone who hasn’t noticed any appreciable effect and thus disputes that info could be right must be correct.

Anyway, remind me tomorrow. I’ve got one of the spray bottles in the garage with the alloy/not safe on certain metals warning. Happy to take a pic of it.

@shifty` your right with some industries it not a desirable product. I was involved in MSIV rebuilding in the nuclear industry and masking tape is not allowed. Locate has to be batch made with a N at the end of the part number and one year expiration date, but I've been told it's the same as we use from the parts store.

I believe the biggest issue is the pressure washer and should never be used in the engine bay.

My gallon of 3d also doesn't have it, but mentions pearls, not using on asphalt and other stuff.

Sadly, can't find my bottle, it's possible I consolidated into the newer bottle during garage-cleanup-ageddon a couple months back. I posted pics on another forum for bike stuff, trying to dig for those images when I get 10-15 mins free time.

As for the original topic, since I'm kinda diverging here... I agree, don't use a pressure washer in an engine bay. Remove the negative battery cable before using water in there. This stuff is magic in a bottle and engine-safe. AutoZone sells it if you need it locally. Spray, 5 mins dwell time, hose off, then get a leaf blower to blow out the engine bay, avoid driving for 1-2 hours if possible, then reattach neg battery cable. Expect your engine will potentially need to re-learn after having the neg cable off that long, so don't do it the day before you're rolling up for emissions inspection.

@FirstGenVol can vouch for it, see his results after cleaning his bay from T2S carnage, proof is in the pictures: https://www.tundras.com/posts/3179346

Just walk away when I have to clean these!

Fresh water is very kind to these batteries.

S100 is a good product too.
